A change of pace for kung-fu star Jackie Chan, CRIME STORY is a grim, fact-based crime thriller about police corruption in modern Hong Kong. The attempt to refashion the aging Chan's image isn't entirely successful, largely because the actor's trademark stunt work is much more fanciful

than a conventional police story can believably contain.

In the wake of a series of kidnappings, Inspector Eddie Chan (Jackie Chan) of the Royal Hong Kong Police is assigned to protect a high-level real-estate magnate who has received kidnapping threats. Despite the best efforts of Chan and his team, the businessman is snatched after a grueling car

chase through the city. The kidnappers demand a $60 million ransom. Frustrated at his failure, Chan scours the city to locate the kidnap victim and apprehend the abductors. At every step of the way, however, he's thwarted by his partner (Kent Cheng), who is secretly conspiring with the kidnap

ring, partly to get back at greedy businessmen and partly for the money. Finally, having located the kidnappers' hideout aboard a freighter, Chan and his team of cops attempt to bring the gang to justice. Chan confronts his partner over his corrupt activities and is forced to do battle with him as

well as the gang. After a brutal fight in the hold of the ship in which he almost loses his life, Chan overcomes his opponents and rescues the kidnap victim.

As a straightforward crime thriller about a tough cop facing down hardened criminals, CRIME STORY more than holds its own. However, the imaginative fight and stunt sequences that fans have come to expect from Jackie Chan, while highly enjoyable, ultimately derail the film's credibility. Had Chan

chosen to play the part more believably and softened some of the stunt work, he might have alienated some of his hard-core fans, but it would have helped to make the film the hard-hitting, anti-corruption crime drama its makers presumably aimed for. CRIME STORY is the first in an unofficial

trilogy of crime thrillers by director Che-Kirk Wong, who followed up with ROCK 'N' ROLL COP, and ORGANIZED CRIME AND TRIAD BUREAU (1994), both of which starred versatile Hong Kong performer Anthony Wong, but neither of which boasts the vigorous action sequences and strong story line of CRIME

STORY. (Profanity, violence.)
