To prove that circumstantial evidence is not enough to convict anyone, a newspaper reporter, Chandler, fakes evidence to make it look as though he has murdered a fellow employee. The "victim" is supposed to appear after the guilty verdict, but something happens to delay him and Chandler all but hangs as a result.
