Chu Chu and the Philly Flash Reviews

This must have sounded great around the producer's conference table: Alan Arkin plays an ex-Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher who has been drunk for the last 20 years, and Carol Burnett costars as Emily, a failed entertainer working the streets as a one-woman band. Unfortunately, it all falls flat on-screen. The unlikely duo are brought together when they simultaneously set eyes on a briefcase, and both lay claim to it. This might have made a fair TV movie, but as a feature it's inadequate on most levels. The stars and the fine character actors in the cast do what they can with the material, but all seem uncomfortable with screenwriter Barbara Dana's (Arkin's wife) haphazard script and David Lowell Rich's overdone direction.
