Talk about your chick flicks! The claymation, egg-laying kind, that is. Portions of THE GREAT ESCAPE and NORMA RAE are scrambled perfectly in this soaring adventure comedy, then seasoned with a whimsical dash of Rube Goldberg. The action takes place on an English

egg farm owned and mismanaged by a pair of dour martinets called the Tweedys (voiced by Miranda Richardson and Tony Haygarth). It looks more like a prison camp than a farm, and the feathered inmates of Coop 17 (think STALAG 17) want out. Mobilized and led by a British clucker named Ginger (Julia

Sawalha), the hens hatch a series of hapless escape plans. Their bid for freedom becomes desperate when daily egg quotas and profits plummet; the greedy Tweedys decide to abandon the egg business for the ready-to-bake chicken potpie trade, and purchase an enormous contraption that will get rid of

those lazy hens once and for all. It's now or never: If the chickens don't fly the coop, they'll all be fricasseed. Enter an American rooster named Rocky (Mel Gibson), an escapee from a traveling circus who may be the Yank they thank... or will they? This is the first full-length feature

film from England's Aardman Animation, best known for Nick Park's Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit shorts; it shares their offbeat sensibility, paired with eye-popping animation effects and a solid story. Co-directed and animated by Park and Peter Lord, this ripping yarn is funny, thrilling

and slyly sophisticated; it's carefully balanced to appeal to kids while keeping adults equally engaged. The voice cast, including Gibson, Richardson and former Absolutely Fabulous cast members Sawalha and Jane Horrocks (as dizzy hen Babs), is exceptional: Who'd have thought you'd find

yourself caring so much about the fate of a flock of fryers? This chicken has legs — lots of them.
