When a contest brings Elvis-type pop star Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) to Sweet Apple, Ohio, for a final performance before entering the Army, songwriter Albert Peterson (Dick Van Dyke) becomes determined to have the singer perform one of his tunes on the program. Albert's difficulties

are compounded by his mother's disapproval of his love for the lovely Rosie DeLeon (Janet Leigh). On the night of the performance, with Ed Sullivan on hand to televise the event, local Birdie fanatic Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) gets special attention from her idol, and both of Albert's wishes are

granted, though not without comic complications. Adapted from the hit Broadway musical, this high-spirited story of rock 'n' roll hysteria in small-town America works wonderfully on film, capturing a sense of dizzy excitement. Innocent-yet-sexy Ann-Margret is perfectly cast as the teenybopper, Van

Dyke is winning in one of his few lead feature film roles, and Paul Lynde (who, like Van Dyke, reprises his Broadway role) hilariously conveys a father's inability to understand teenagers and rock music. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Score and Best Sound.
