they become friends. Eventually, after Lawrence has developed an infamous reputation as a robber and killer, Garrett, now a lawman, must track him down and bring him to justice. When Tozzi finally tracks Lawrence down he is able to convince the young killer to change his ways, but it is too late;

soon afterward the kid is gunned down by a rival (in real life, Garrett killed the Kid). Though Tozzi didn't pull the trigger, he is accused of the killing and the blame follows him the rest of his life.
