It is often in their simplicity that Eric Rohmer's films are most complex, and in BOYFRIENDS AND GIRLFRIENDS (the final entry in the director's six-part series, "Comedies and Proverbs") Rohmer has made his simplest film yet. Set in the suburb of Cergy-Pontoise--a pristine glass and

concrete environment with man-made lakes--this ordinary comedy of manners becomes complex only when the characters, in their rage for chaos within the orderly Cergy-Pontoise, try to alter their lives. Blanche (Emmanuelle Chaulet) is a 24-year-old, seemingly conservative, lower-level administrator

of cultural affairs. She has no friends in Cergy-Pontoise until she meets Lea (Sophie Renoir), an exotic-looking computer student who is a couple of years Blanche's junior. Lea lives a bohemian life with her boyfriend, Fabien (Eric Viellard). Despite the fact that she and Fabien have nothing in

common--what she enjoys (dancing and partying) exhausts him, and what he enjoys (wind surfing) exhausts her--they remain together. Blanche, on the other hand, does enjoy Fabien's lifestyle, although she has her eye on Alexandre (Francois-Eric Gendron), a ladies' man in his early 30s. In Rohmer's

world no one really loves the right person. Nonetheless the film ultimately offers a romantic optimism that represents a new dawn for Rohmer and serves as a fitting close to "Comedies and Proverbs."
