Comely young Sarah Jane Bromwell (Amelia Heinlie) is in love with Johnny Del Grissom (Patrick Muldoon), a racing enthusiast from the wrong side of the tracks. Too bad Sarah's father, Sheriff Bromwell (Rex Linn), doesn't approve. As this Southwestern version of Romeo and Juliet unfolds, a small band of escaped convicts, led by D.J. Wheeler (Peter Greene), are stopped for speeding by Bromwell, who happens to have his daughter in tow. After D.J. murders the sheriff and abducts Sarah, Johnny pursues them from a distance. Meanwhile, Deputy Babbitt (Jake Busey), who also covets Sarah, discovers Brownwell's body and assumes Johnny's the killer. Eventually, however, Johnny convinces Norm otherwise and enlists his help to rescue Sarah. Some action fodder can transcend its genre limitations with the right attitude, and this high-voltage road flick does just that. Determined to break the entertainment speed barrier, the 100 MPH filmmakers employ expert 2nd-unit work as Johnny and the audience negotiate one hair-pin turn after another. Although the star-crossed lovers subplot is negligible, the top-notch cast, believably embodying assorted grease monkeys and speed demons, bolsters the mindless thrills of a car chase adventure that deserves the NASCAR seal of approval.
