Attention Shoppers Reviews

Self-absorbed prime time heartthrob Enrique (Nestor Carbonell) doesn't mind playing an ethnic stereotype on a fluffy sitcom. Despite disparaging comments from his neglected wife, he's looking forward to making his first public appearance at a K-Mart opening. Aboard the plane, Enrique meets soap star Mark (Luke Perry), who shares his theories of personality power. After Mark pumps up Enrique to expect public adulation, Enrique is disappointed by the poor turnout at the K-Mart. Unceremoniously dumped in a clothing aisle, Enrique greets hecklers instead of fans. Later, he witnesses how Mark smoothly milks the crowd. Enrique is faced with a dilemma: Return to his wife for comfort, or try harder to please the public. A thin skein of plot unravels around a few decent sight gags and some homilies about self-esteem. Poking fun at stardom yet taking itself far too seriously, this underperformer fails as both a satire on fan obsessions and as commentary on the pitfalls of actor's ego. Although he wrote this screenplay as a showcase for himself, Carbonell is too blandly sympathetic for us to laugh at his comic humiliation; it's the kind of role Robert Downey Jr. or Ben Stiller could pull off, but Carbonell can't.
