This big bug movie represents a leap forward for Vermont-based Edgewood Studios and filmmaker Brett Piper (PSYCLOPS). Paleontology expert Professor Jonathan Mugford (David Bunce) hires a pilot, Pachowski (Rob Monkiewicz), to transport him and four students to a dig in Arizona. En route, a meteor shower slams Pachowski's aircraft and forces him to crash land on a remote farm, fifty miles from the nearest town. Mugford's teaching assistant, Chandra Weaver (Irene Joseph), takes this setback in stride, but students Deke (Dan Merrimam), Trina (Bevin McGraw) and Kelly (Alexxus Young) complain vociferously. Little do they know how much there is to complain about: The meteorites stirred up the local subterranean, prehistoric, giant-spider population and the first item on their menu is an unwary farm worker. Mugford's party trespasses on an abandoned cabin, whose owner, farmer Moses Cobb (James Aspden), who regales them with incredible tales of his father's eight-legged sideshow attraction, the Hell Spider. Further investigation reveals that the enormous spider carcass in Cobb's barn is not a prop. After seeing the oversized arachnids in action, Mugford realizes the enormity of his discovery and forgets all about fossil work in Arizona. Pachowski and Weaver are more concerned with self-preservation and pelt the invaders with Molotov cocktails and handy dynamite, but in short order the mega-spiders have dragged Deke, Cobb and Kelly off to the queen spider's nest. Accompanied by plucky Trina, the remaining arachnid busters descend into the bowels of a cave, despite Mugford's interference. Although this horror picture sets its sights low, writer-director Piper has ingenious fun with his miniature effects and with the staging of the creepy crawlers' attacks. Among the actors, Monkiewicz seems most likely to make the trip from Vermont to Hollywood; he'd make a terrific Clark Kent/Superman.
