This existential action movie could have been called WAITING FOR GODOT AT THE GARAGE: The talented cast wanders around evoking various states of confusion, suppressed rage and sexual frustration as they rewrite the book of Job. Welder Johnny (John Turturro) and journalist Sean (Will Patton) marching to their own and draw strength from their friendship that helps them deal with nasty employers and bullies like neighborhood bartender Carl (Paul Calderon). Johnny, who lacks basic social skills, pursues unattainable women, while Sean collects lizards. Meanwhile, Rachel (Lili Taylor), who lives in Sean's apartment building, takes her car to the garage owned by the incredibly greedy Mr. Yannick (Olek Krupa), who not only cheats average customers like Rachel but also runs a stolen car business. Yannick feeds information about the luxury cars he services to car thieves Mr. Lilly (Joseph Maher), Louis (Richard Bright) and their part-time driver Carl; they then steal the vehicles for resale abroad. When Rachel discovers that she's overpaid for inferior repairs, she appeals to Sean for advice. Sean involves Johnny, who agrees to reason with Yannick and subsequently falls in love with Rachel. After the sadistic Carl beats up Sean, Johnny decides to take a stand against opportunists and hustlers. By the time Johnny and his worked-up cronies head for Yannick's garage, Carl has died during a botched car-jacking and Louis is convinced that Yannick and Mr. Lilly set the cops on him. With Johnny's ragtag avengers and an enraged Louis simultaneously headed for a confrontation with Yannick, there's sure to be trouble. An awkward mix of crime film and a shaggy dog story, this film features bursts of inspired performing but little momentum.
