Polyglot group of volunteers is trained as British saboteurs in 1943 London and then parachuted into Belgium to blow up an office containing important Nazi records and to rescue Illing, whom the Germans are pumping for vital infomation. The first 40 minutes deal with the training period

in semi-documentary style, a la 13 RUE MADELEINE, with Justice as the sabotage chief, sturdy, stoical, and believable. Signoret, in her British film debut, has joined the force to forget a lost love and becomes involved with Jackson--their scenes together are understated and touching--while a host

of character actors solidly play out the roles of other patriots--Beatty as a priest; Preville, who loves Beatty and whose neck is broken when landing in Belgium; Dupuis as a secret Nazi agent; and Slater, who has disguised a famous face through plastic surgery in order to act as an anonymous

saboteur. There was no length to which the British would not go in defeating their arch-enemy! The group accomplishes its mission but a heavy toll is paid in this well-mounted production.
