Oberon wearies of hubby Morgan and his globe-trotting for a newspaper syndicate; she flies to Reno and gets an uncontested divorce, immediately submerging herself in a whirlwind courtship with ultragentleman Bellamy. Morgan hears the news of his wife's disaffection when finishing a

Russian assignment and flies back to the states, attempting every crazy stunt imaginable to win her back, while Hayworth, who outshines the stiffly British Oberon in every scene, goes after Morgan. Many funny scenes are not enough to pull this one up to the level of top screwball comedy, mostly

due to beautiful Oberon's inability to play her scenes expansively and handle banter, let alone take a pratfall which the script called for; it was embarrassing, not funny, to see a lady of such dignity attempt a Judy Canova fall. This was a hand-picked Jack Warner comedy and it shows. Warner

wanted to be a standup comic all his life; the role of movie mogul was a second ambition, he later claimed in retirement, but what would one expect from a man who once attended a dinner in his honor, given by Mme. Chiang-Kai-Shek, and was called upon to give a speech before a long table of

dignified Chinese-Americans. He slapped his forehead in mock shock, exclaiming: "You know, looking down this table reminds me that I forgot to send out my laundry!" Not a single Asian face cracked a smile. Fortunately, AFFECTIONATELY YOURS produced some smiles, even on the faces of McDaniel and

McQueen, their first pairing since GONE WITH THE WIND. If you look closely, you'll see in this Lloyd Bacon farce novice actors who later became stars--Emerson as a nurse, Smith as a bridesmaid, Stevens as a guard.
