If you thought BOOGIE NIGHTS gave an all too sunny-side-up depiction of the porn industry, you're in for an even bigger surprise with this strange family drama from Italy. Written and directed by its star, Marco Filiberti, the film follows the growing relationship between a French-Italian aristocrat and his brother, an unnaturally blond black sheep who leads a secret life in Rome. Confusingly structured as a flashback wrapped within a mockumentary, it's also a comedy — sort of. After his estranged 29-year-old baby brother, Ricardo (Filiberti), returns home to attend his father's funeral, Federico Soldani (Urbano Barberini) decides to leave the lavish family chateau in Illiers, France, and his girlfriend (70's Euro-sleaze horror star Erica Blanc), and return with Ricardo to Rome. Federico claims he's meeting their father's lawyers, but he's really in town to learn as much as he can about Ricardo's mysterious life. Federico suspects drugs, but the truth, when he stumbles upon it accidentally, is far more shocking: Ricardo, who has reinvented himself as Riki Kandinski, is a gay porn star who, when he's not appearing regularly in magazines and movies, offers his services a high-priced call boy. Initially disgusted by the revelation, Federico nevertheless is determined to accept his brother for who he is, and immerses himself in his Riki's "glamorous," if tawdry, life. Together the brothers party the nights away in Rome's chic-est gay bars, and one afternoon Federico even accompanies Riki to the bright, cheerful set where his latest movie is being shot. As he begins to shed his prejudices, Federico also becomes entranced by Riki's otherworldly neighbor, Luna (Rosalinda Celentano, last seen tempting Jesus in THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST), a long, androgynous drink of water who carves angels in the apartment next door. There are enough scenes here to make even the most jaded viewer squirm — Riki proving to Federico that he can manage an erection in five seconds, Federico watching intently as his brother has sex with strangers in a porn movie — but what's strangest of all is the sheer falsity of the fantasy world these characters inhabit, a place where gay bottoms are internationally famous, appear on talk shows and become the subjects of documentary films. It can make for entertainingly silly viewing, but it should come as no surprise that the film's plea for tolerance and unexpectedly tragic ending — an unfortunate throwback to the Dark Ages of gays in films — ring equally hollow.
