Tyrone Power stars here, in one of his most successful films, as Tim Baker, a brash American pilot (he easily could have been the model for TOP GUN's Tom Cruise) ferrying planes to Canada as part of the US' WW II "Cash-and-Carry" policy to arm Britain while maintaining neutrality. In

Canada, he agrees to fly planes across the Atlantic. During a London air raid he meets an old girl friend, Carol Brown (Betty Grable), who is now working at a nightclub and volunteering daily for the war effort and who wants nothing to do with Tim, criticizing his ambivalence about the war. To

impress her, he joins the RAF and is forced to go through flight school again, a routine that bores him silly, while finding competition for Carol in the person of his wing commander (John Sutton). The air battles, some taken from actual footage shot in combat over Europe, are seamlessly cut into

the film, as is footage of the Dunkirk evacuation, with a huge reenactment of the battle staged on a beach in northern California. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Special Effects. It was a great success and helped prepare isolationist America for its upcoming role in the war.
