When yuppie Manhattan lawyer Ted Barnes (Gregory Patrick) discovers that he was adopted and that his birth mother (Ruth Raymond, who bears a suspicious resemblance to porno great Georgina Spelvin) lives in Long Island, he heads out to spend the weekend at her fabulous estate.

Unfortunately, she's not exactly a model of sanity, and before you can say, "Oedipus Rex," Mad Mama has poisoned Ted's wife (Linda Blair), then, confusing her son with his father, tries to force Ted into incestuous nuptials. With credibility problems that the title character's psychosis can't

explain away, A WOMAN OBSESSED pursues cheap thrills so blatantly that even its above-average production values and the admirable restraint of its early sequences fail to recommend it. As the plot grows wilder and wilder, sense and character motivation are thrown to the wind, until neither the

director nor the cast can involve us in the emotional dynamics of this would-be serious psychological chiller that can't resist gross exploitation. However, nondiscriminating horror fans will find that the denouement is sick fun raised to spectacularly campy heights.
