A routine cavalry picture is redeemed somewhat by a decent cast of character actors. Hamilton plays the naive young officer assigned to serve under brutal captain Boone. The two get off to a bad start and Hamilton complicates matters by trying to rekindle an old romance with Patten, who

is living on the base to be close to her fiance, Douglas. When Douglas is killed by Indians while out on patrol, Hamilton feels guilty, thinking the stormy romantic situation he has created distracted Douglas from his duties. Hamilton volunteers to be used as a decoy in a plan devised by Boone to

bring the violent Apaches out in the open. The trick works and the Apaches are routed, but the cost is high and many men die, including Boone's only true friend, O'Connell. Hamilton returns to the fort a hardened soldier and bids Patten good-bye as she boards the stagecoach headed back east.

Bronson has a strong secondary part as a hard-drinking, womanizing trooper; Chamberlain, who went on to greater things, made his feature-film debut in this first effort of producer Enders. Screenwriter Bellah's cavalry stories were filmed by John Ford for his remarkable trilogy FORT APACHE (1948);

SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949); and RIO GRANDE (1950). Songs--written and sung by Duane Eddy--include "Water from a Bad Well" and "Ballad of Camden Yates."
