A Stranger Is Watching Reviews

Artie (Rip Torn) is a psychopathic killer who kidnaps and scares the daylights out of 11-year-old Julie (Shawn von Schreiber) and television reporter Sharon Martin (Kate Mulgrew), who happens to be in love with the girl's father, Steve (James Naughton). What's more the hostages are kept in the dark, dingy bowels of New York's Grand Central Station. The entire film has a sadistic bent to it, but curiously--given that it was directed by Mr. FRIDAY THE 13TH, Sean S. Cunningham--only a few murders occur, not nearly enough to sustain the interest of fans of this sort of thing. This was definitely Cunningham's bid for respectability, and, of course, it failed at the box office. Luckily, it does contain yet another wonderful performance by Torn, who plays the most sympathetic psychopath in recent memory.
