Modest, unsensationalistic World War I-era drama about a Hungarian immigrant and his tribulations in America. Peter Pleznik (Rudolph Schildkraut) arrives in the U.S. determined to make a better life for his family. He takes a job as a janitor in a federal building and quickly applies to

become an American citizen, despite the protests of his friend Sokol (Fritz Feld), an anarchist. Five years later, Pleznic receives his citizenship papers, assisted by Judge Gresham (Robert Edeson). To show his gratitude, Pleznik asks his wife (Louise Dresser) to bake a cake for the judge. But

unbeknownst to him, Sokol removes the cake from the box and replaces it with a bomb, which explodes and kills Gresham. Pleznik is blamed, and while he's in jail his son -- who has enlisted in the Army -- is killed overseas. Despite these misfortunes, Pleznik's faith in his new country remains

strong. When Sokol finally confesses to having planted the fatal bomb, Pleznik is set free and returns to his lowly job a happy man.
