This controversial film focuses on three women--housewife Christine M. (Edda Barends), waitress Annie (Nelly Frijda), and secretary Andrea (Henriette Tol)--who, though unacquainted, spontaneously kill a male boutique owner when he catches one of them shoplifting. They are arrested and

assigned a female psychiatrist, Dr. Janine Van Den Bos (Cox Habbema), who prepares a plea of insanity. Christine appears to be the most deeply affected of the threesome, slipping into a state of shock and refusing to utter a word. As Dr. Van Den Bos talks with Annie and Andrea, she begins to have

her doubts about the insanity plea, and the murder makes increasingly more sense to her. Each of the three women was dealing with her own frustrations with men: the housewife was a slave to housekeeping duties and a victim of a thoughtless husband; the waitress subjected to rude comments by male

customers; and the secretary constantly treated as a subordinate at the executive office where she worked. Instead of confirming the expected insanity pleas, Dr. Van Den Bos tells the courtroom that the women are fully responsible for the crime against the patronizing shopkeeper. But to the

surprise of the males in the courtroom, all the women present unite in a grand show of female solidarity. QUESTION OF SILENCE is the first feature from writer-director Marleen Gorris, who hit upon the idea after reading an article about a working-class woman's arrest for shoplifting. Instead of

putting three murderesses on trial, this superb, disturbing feminist film turns the tables and puts male society on the stand--which will undoubtedly anger as many viewers as it thrills.
