A Perfect Couple Reviews

Though it isn't completely successful, this is an entertaining film, far more successful than the Altman projects which immediately preceded it, A WEDDING and QUINTET. Dooley is a lonely middle-aged man who is completely dominated by autocratic Greek father, Vadnis. Through a computer dating service, Dooley meets Heflin and is attracted to her. She's a rather insecure woman who plays in a rock band led by Neeley (who starred in JESUS CHRIST, SUPERSTAR). Neeley rules his extended family of musicians, singers, and hangers-on every bit as autocratically as Vadnis controls his more traditional family. Vadnis would never approve of his son dating Heflin, while Neeley so drives his people they barely have time for a social life. The film focuses on these two people as they attempt to deal with their "family" problems and come to terms with one another. Dooley, an Altman favorite, is quite good as a man torn between traditional responsibilities and his desire to become independent, while Heflin is winsome as the object of his desire. Moreno does a nice turn as Dooley's sister who encourages him to stand up to the old man, while Vadnis is properly filled with bluster. Neeley and the "Keepin' 'Em Off the Streets" band provide some worthwhile music, including the songs "Hurricane" (Tom Berg, Ted Neeley, Allan Nicholls) and "Fantasy" (Nicholls).
