Schygulla stars as a German shopkeeper in the village of Brombach during WW II. Her husband away at war, she falls in love with Lysak, a Polish laborer--thereby disregarding the official ban on relationships between Germans and prisoners of war. The lovers go to great lengths to keep

their romance secret but are discovered by a snoopy neighbor, Barrault, who wants to take over Schygulla's shop. To escape the gossipmongers and the threat of discovery by the Nazis, Schygulla tries to visit her husband in Bavaria. After intercepting one of Schygulla's letters to Stanislaw,

however, the Nazis finally learn of the affair and apprehend the Pole. Officials in Brombach attempt to "Aryanize" Lysak (thereby tagging him as racially equal), out of respect for Schygulla and in order to save her from a charge of criminal misconduct. Intercut with the wartime story is that of a

modern-day search by a mysterious stranger who, with his 16-year-old son in tow, tries to discover what really happened between Schygulla and Lysak. Based on a nonfiction best-seller that documented an actual case (including the Germans' embarrassing failure to Aryanize the Pole and their botched

attempt to execute him in a quarry), A LOVE IN GERMANY seems less concerned with the love of the title than with the political climate and its anti-Nazi message. Wajda, who has turned out some of cinema's most provocative political statements, does so again here. The politics tend to obscure the

love story, but this is undoubtedly what Wajda intended. (In German and Polish; English subtitles.)
