Robinson plays an aging grape grower in search of a wife. He spots Banky waitressing at a restaurant and asks for her hand in marriage by way of a letter and photograph of himself, as they have never met. But the photograph he encloses is actually that of his handsome young assistant,

Ames, since Robinson fears Banky may turn him down if she knows he is old and a cripple as well. Anxious for a stable home, the waitress accepts the offer, only to be shocked when she discovers the true identity of her admirer. But she learns to love Robinson for his honest and pure heart and soon

marries him. Her romantic fling with Ames threatens their relationship at one point, but their love for each other is strengthened afterwards. Strong performances by the cast, especially Robinson, who evokes a lot of compassion. Victor Sjostrom (billed here as "Seastrom") was a prominent Swedish

director who did a few American films before he went back to Sweden. His American masterpiece was THE WIND (1928) with Lillian Gish.
