Concluding that there's no rest for the clever, Jane Marple interrupts her recuperative vacation to solve several murders in this smashing Agatha Christie outing originally airing as a British telefilm. To ensure a speedy recovery for Miss Marple (Joan Hickson), her nephew sends her on a Barbados getaway. But how can Miss Marple recover from bronchitis when she's constantly pestered by the anecdote-spewing Major Palgrave (Frank Middlemass)? While the Caribbean resort's owners, Tim (Adrian Lukis) and Molly Kendall (Sophie Ward), joke about the Major scaring away customers, the other guests ignore his tall tales. Alluding to his criminology career, Major Palgrave informs Miss Marple that he has spotted an elusive murder suspect at the Kendalls' hotel. Could Major Palgrave be pointing a finger at wealthy Greg Dyson (Robert Swan), or at Greg's wife, Lucky (Sue Lloyd), or at their employee, Edward Hillingdon (Michael Feast)? Perhaps, the Major was spying on self-made millionaire, Jason Rafiel (Donald Pleasence), or Rafiel's bodyguard, or his secretary? After the Major expires that night, the local doctor rushes to judgment and rules high blood pressure as the cause of death. However, Miss Marple has befriended an island maid named Victoria (Valerie Buchanan), who swears that Greg Dyson's medication was planted in Major Palgrave's medicine cabinet. Fearful of an inquest, a distraught Molly wrings her hands about going out of business. Aware of Miss Marple's reputation, the local police chief, Inspector Weston (Joseph Mydell), swaps theories with her. Miss Marple. though having noticed Molly's increasingly erratic behavior, refuses to jump to conclusions when Molly is discovered holding a knife over Victoria's slain body. If the Major really did glimpse a fugitive amongst the vacationers, then that sociopath hasn't changed his /her homicidal stripes. Whose tropical idyll will be cut short next? The on-location shoot liberated the filmmakers behind Christie whodunit; even under a poolside umbrella, Miss Marple is in her element as she spars with shady characters, while the director and cinematographer explore deceptively sunny vistas. This BBC telefilm is the second adaptation of Christie's 1964 novel, following a 1983 American TV-movie starring Helen Hayes.
