All the TV Characters Who Died in 2019

Game of Thrones' final season was a bloodbath. First, little Ned Umber (Harry Grasby) got strung up by the Night King in particularly gory fashion, but then the Battle of Winterfell -- what we could see of it, at least -- cost the lives of Edd (Ben Crompton), Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey), Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer), Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), and Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) before the Night King was finally defeated. Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) sacrificed herself to the wind, and fans then watched Rhaegal and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) get ambushed, while Lord Varys' (Conleth Hill) betrayal of his queen was soon met with fire.

Sandor Clegane, aka The Hound (Rory McCann), finally had his fatal face off with his brother Gregor, aka The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson), after Qyburn (Anton Lesser) was unceremoniously disposed of. And while Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) managed to kill Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk), he still found himself trapped with Cersei (Lena Headey) in the crumbling cellar of their castle. In the end, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) had so fully embraced being the Mad Queen that Jon Snow (Kit Harington) had no choice but to assassinate her before she could begin burning down the rest of Westeros.

Another show that lost a lot of lives this year was The CW's The 100, which saw the demises of Zeke (Jordan Bolger), Rose (Amelie Eve), and Cillian (Carlo Marks), among others. But the biggest death of the latest season was that of Marcus Kane (Henry Ian Cusick). Although Kane had a chance to live in a new body, he ultimately sacrificed himself to save others.

Veronica Mars fans might have been delighted to see the series get yet another extension when Hulu revived the drama for a fourth season, but the show's return came at a great cost. Although Veronica (Kristen Bell) was ultimately able to solve the mystery of who was planting those bombs around Neptune, she didn't know there was a final explosive hidden until it was too late, and Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) perished in the blast -- almost immediately after the two had tied the knot.

Riverdale fans said goodbye to the show's sturdiest parental figure, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), following the actor's real-life death from a stroke. After the show returned from its summer hiatus, they revealed that Fred died in a hit-and-run accident after attempting to save the life of a woman (played by Perry's former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty).

Despite the doctors' best efforts to save him, Station 19's Lucas Ripley (Brett Tucker) succumbed to his injuries after being exposed to hydrofluoric acid at a burning coffee processing plant while saving Captain Conlin. His final scene was especially heartbreaking, as he got to share a few final words with his love, Vic (Barrett Doss).

With respect to Old Knight, the biggest death on The OA: Part II -- well, apart from the show itself -- was that of Jesse Mills (Brendan Meyer), who overdosed on Fentanyl patches and was unable to be revived, despite his friends' best efforts to do the healing dance.

Just as Candy (Angelica Ross) was solidifying herself as a bona fide fan favorite on Pose, she was tragically murdered in a story that echoed the truth of the dangers facing trans women and black trans women in particular.

It might not have been a surprise to see Power's LaKeisha Grant (La La Anthony) meet her end -- and some fans even welcomed it -- but it was still a bit shocking to see her gunned down by Tasha (Naturi Naughton), who'd mistakenly perceived the sight of her packed bags as an indication that she was turning on her son.

The Walking Dead is famous for its anyone-can-die unpredictability, but 10 named characters getting massacred all at once and having their zombified heads stuck on pikes for their loved ones to find was unprecedented, even for this brutal show. In the penultimate episode of Season 9, Enid (Katelyn Nacon), Tara (Alanna Masterson), and Henry (Matt Lintz) were among those who lost their lives. The writers didn't even know who they were going to kill until right before they did it, making the massacre even more shocking.

Chicago Fire lost one of its originals when Otis (Yuri Sandarov) died after being severely burned in the warehouse boiler room explosion that trapped him and several of his colleagues, the rest of whom survived.

After realizing she'd become a pawn to Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer), Red Daughter (Melissa Benoist) sacrificed herself by absorbing his kryptonite blast to save Kara.

Even a turf war détente between the Sirens and the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) couldn't satisfy Tabitha's (Jessica Lucas) desire for revenge on Gotham. However, her efforts to end him backfired when her bullet failed, and he stabbed her to death, finally avenging the death of his mother.

It rarely ends well for snitches on Power, and Proctor (Jerry Ferrara) found that out the hard way after he shared evidence of Tommy (Joseph Sikora) killing Ruiz (Luis Antonio Ramos). As revenge, Tommy broke in and shot Proctor to death, but not before Proctor managed to call his daughter and say goodbye.

Another Riverdale character who died this year was Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro), who was killed by Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt). Penelope was revealed to be the mastermind behind the rise of the Gargoyle King and Hal's escape from prison. However, she became disappointed by his performance as the Black Hood after he failed to kill Betty (Lili Reinhart) and her friends in the woods.

The Handmaid's Tale fans barely got to know Season 3 newcomer Commander Winslow (Christopher Meloni), but what we did see of him was quite enough. Based in Washington, D.C., Winslow hosted the Waterfords and showcased an even crueler part of Gilead. When he attempted to force June (Elisabeth Moss) to sleep with him at Jezebels, she stabbed him to death, and an attending maid quietly cleaned up the mess.

Chicago Med featured two notable deaths this year: Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) and Cornelius Rhodes (D.W. Moffett). Ava killed Connor's (Colin Donnel) father in a disturbing and manipulative attempt to win him back. After Ava admitted her involvement in the death, she ended her own life.

Stranger Things' Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) has always been a bit despicable, but he became a full-blown villain after being body-snatched by the Mind Flayer. But in Season 3's climatic Starcourt Mall battle, Billy had a major moment of redemption after regaining his senses, thanks to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) invading his mind to remind him of his past. Billy's final act was to stand up to the Mind Flayer so that his sister and the others had a chance to live, while he was fatally pierced through the stomach by the monster.

There's a chance that Rio (Manny Montana) didn't actually die at the end of Good Girls' second season, but as far as Beth (Christina Hendricks) and the viewers know, his life was over when she turned the gun on him instead of Det. Turner (James Lesure) in that season finale.

Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) died in spectacular fashion on American Gods this year. The unlucky leprechaun attempted to spear Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) but was thwarted by Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), who turned the weapon against him.

Adam West, who voiced the mayor on Family Guy, died in 2017, and this year the series paid tribute to West in a special episode. Titled "Adam West High," the episode showed Brian and Quagmire running for mayor after revealing that West's Family Guy character had died offscreen.

In Orange Is the New Black's final season, Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) met with a tragic death. Believing she'd failed her GED test, Pennsatucky, who had been clean, relapsed and suffered a fatal drug overdose. It was later revealed that she'd passed the exam.

The first scene of Mr. Robot's fourth and final season culminated in the sudden, shocking murder of Angela Moss (Portia Doubleday) at the hands of Whiterose's (BD Wong) agents. And if that wasn't upsetting enough, it was clearly a case of fridging. Creator Sam Esmail even admitted to orchestrating her death as a means of inspiring Elliot (Rami Malek) to "strike back, hard."

After surviving the Battle of Shelley Island on Supergirl, Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) managed to escape to a secret hiding spot. But he was then confronted by his sister Lena (Katie McGrath), who stripped him of his powers and shot him in the chest.

After her rapist was killed, Miss Ruby (Juanita Jennings) found herself surrounded by a gang of his friends in the series finale of Star. She bravely prayed before accepting that they were going to shoot her as a means of vengeance.

Emiko Queen (Sea Shimooka) was killed by her own people in the Ninth Circle once her plot to destroy the Queen family legacy led to the exposure of the terrorist organization on Arrow.

Nora West-Allen's (Jessica Parker Kennedy) entire existence was erased on The Flash after the heroes headed to the future to defeat Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh). As a result, they changed the timeline and Nora was never born.

Although the Winchester brothers stopped themselves from killing him, Supernatural's Jack Kline (Alexander Calvert) was still taken down by God for all his crimes against humanity.

The mystery of who was in that coffin at the end of Empire's fifth season was a major question mark for fans. However, instead of it being Andre (Trai Byers), whose health had been declining, it was Kingsley (A.Z. Kelsey), who took his own life after confronting Lucious (Terrence Howard) about his inattention to him.

Another Handmaid's Tale character who perished in Season 3 was Eleanor Lawrence (Julie Dretzin), who overdosed on her medications. June (Elisabeth Moss) had a chance to save her, but -- in a turning point that showed how far June was willing to go -- she decided to let Mrs. Lawrence die in order to protect her plan to help dozens of children escape to Canada.

The finale of Veep flashed forward to the future, long after Selina Meyer's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) turbulent term as president, to show the then-deceased politician being laid rest in a funeral that was ultimately upstaged by the death of the much more beloved Tom Hanks.
