Ben Platt Has Big Ambitions in First Trailer for Ryan Murphy's The Politician

Ben Platt is making promises he can't keep in the first trailer for Netflix's The Politician.

The upcoming dark comedy from Ryan Murphy stars Platt as Payton Hobart, a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, California, who has known since age 7 that he's going to be the president of the United States. But first he'll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image.

"Your ambition frightens me," Payton's mother, Georgina (Gwyneth Paltrow), tells him in the trailer.

The Politician is created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan; all three serve as executive producers alongside Platt. The eight-episode first season also stars Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Rahne Jones, Theo Germaine, David Corenswet, Bob Balaban, and Benjamin Barrett.

The Politician premieres Friday, Sept. 27 on Netflix.
