Shadowhunters: Should Alec Propose to Magnus?

There are Malec episodes, and then there are freaking Malec episodes, and it's safe to say this week's episode of Shadowhunters was the latter.

Not only did we get treated to a truly dazzling dance scene (yeah, yeah it was a coma-induced hallucination, but we're taking the win, OK?), we also got several extremely emotional moments that really cemented where Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Matthew Daddario) are at this stage in their relationship.

First, Alec tearfully apologized to a comatose Magnus for selfishly avoiding how much pain Magnus had clearly been in because he was too preoccupied being happy they might actually get to grow old together if Magnus no longer had his magic. Sure, Shadowhunters, just twist that knife a little harder, why don't you? Then we got to watch Alec's emotional appeal to Lorenzo (Javier Muñoz), where we all realized the lengths Alec would go to in order to keep Magnus in his life. Finally, the episode ended with Alec seemingly coming to that same realization and asking his mother for the family ring so he could -- you guessed it -- propose to Magnus!

Now, while we're all still riding that emotional high knowing that Alec Lightwood is going to get down on one knee and ask Magnus Bane to be his forever, there's more than just happy endings and "I dos" to consider. Sorry to kill your buzz.

Alec hasn't been making the greatest decisions about how to handle the changes in his newly mortal Magnus so far. Sure, he's living in a world where he's just realized how much Magnus means to him and exactly how devastated he'd be to lose the love of his life, and that's a big mood. But there's a reason everyone tells you not to make major life decisions after a near-death experience, and rushing into a marriage is pretty much exactly that. Not to mention, they've just decided to live together. It feels like they're skipping ahead a bit, deciding to tie the knot before they've even found a cute brownstone to call their own.

On a totally separate note, Magnus has been going through a seriously rough time lately. He's lost his magic, his identity, his home, and now his last hope of getting his old life back in a very short amount of time. If anyone needs to take a beat and reevaluate their life, it's Magnus. Given his headspace, there's a pretty scary chance that if Alec were to propose right now... Magnus might say no. That would be beyond crushing, both for fans and probably for Alec.

At the same time, there are a finite number of episodes left in this series, and the Shadowhunters trailer did seem to indicate that someone would be getting married before the year was out. Maybe we're just overthinking something that should be totally simple and fighting a Malec endgame is just a waste of time?
