James Marsters Likes the Idea of a Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

While fans may have had mixed reactions to the news that a Buffy the Vampire Slayerreboot was in the works, not everyone shares that hesitation. James Marsters, who played the wonderfully chaotic vampire Spike in the original series, actually sounds pretty psyched about it!

"I like the idea of making a new slayer in that universe that's not Buffy, whole new deal," Marsters recently told a small group of reporters at an event for his Hulu series Marvel's Runaways. "I think Joss [Whedon] being involved means it's going to be good... But I'm very happy that that theme of "don't give up" [which] basically is, I think, the theme of the show at the end of the day, I'm glad for that theme to keep getting played."

Like many fans, Marsters seemed relieved that this "reboot" won't simply be a retelling of Buffy's story, but rather a new tale with a new slayer. In more traditional reboot situations, you tend to get into dicey territory when it come to honoring the original characters and the performances of the actors who played them originally. If anything, this potential new series sounds more akin to The CW's Charmed reboot, which will take the basic story structure and mythology of the original series and use it to tell new adventures with new characters.

Monica Owusu-Breen, who has been tapped as the showrunner for the still-in-development series, voiced a similar sentiment this summer, saying, "There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel. They can't be replaced. Joss Whedon's brilliant and beautiful series can't be replicated. I wouldn't try to. But here we are, 20 years later, and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer."
