Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week: Mindhunter, Sextuplets

Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of Aug. 16-Aug. 22.

It's Basque Week on Netflix, apparently. There are two projects from Spain's Basque Region coming to the streaming service on Aug. 16, a comedy movie called The Little Switzerland and a terrorism thriller series called Victim Number 8. Netflix always has a lot of stuff from Spain -- there's also a Spanish (Spanish-language) series called 45 rpm -- but not usually from the autonomous Basque Region, the northern region with its own language and culture. Just an interesting thing, that's all! The marquee release is Season 2 of Mindhunter, which is Netflix's finest drama series, in my opinion.

The Biggest Releases

Mindhunter, Season 2
David Fincher'sobsessively meticulous criminal profiler series remains one of Netflix's very best shows in Season 2. Much of the action shifts to Atlanta -- and by "action" I mean "conversation," because this is a show completely driven by dialogue, delivered by skilled actors in interestingly shot rooms -- as FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) field-test their theories about serial killers by trying to help catch the perpetrator of the Atlanta Child Murders, the first time profiling was used in trying to solve a case. Along the way, they interview Charles Manson, David Berkowitz, check back in with their old pal Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton), and investigate the BTK Killer.

Sextuplets
One of the movie genres Netflix is single-handedly keeping alive is the dumb PG-13 comedy. This one features Marlon Wayans playing six roles, Klumps-style, as each of the sextuplets. The main guy finds out his biological mother had sextuplets, he sets out to find them, and they're all weirdos. Lots of slapstick and tasteless humor to appeal to the 12-year-old boy in all of us. The director bears the hilarious name Michael Tiddes. See? 12 years old. (Trailer)

Everything Else

Hyperdrive, Season 1
A bunch of different types of wild-ass race cars run through a series of vehicular obstacle courses that require drivers to execute crazy stunts at very high speeds in this reality competition show. If you enjoy being amazed by people who are very good at driving, you'll love this show. (Wednesday, Aug. 21)

45 rpm, Season 1
Spanish Vinylbut without all the coke and craziness? A music producer launches a new label to promote the new sounds of '60s Madrid in this light drama. (Trailer)

Apache: La Vida de Carlos Tevez, Season 1
This gritty biographical drama series tells the story of the early life of Argentine soccer star Carlos Tevez, who overcame a tragic childhood in one of Buenos Aires' toughest neighborhoods to become an Olympic gold medal winner. (Trailer)

Better Than Us, Season 1
This is a story about a different kind of Russian bot: In Moscow, in the not-too-distant future where humanoid robots serve actual humans, a man finds himself at the center of the first murder committed by a bot. (Trailer)

Diagnosis, Season 1
This medical docuseries is based on the popular New York Times Magazine column of the same name, where patients with baffling medical problems get crowdsourced diagnoses and empathy. It's not for the squeamish, but it's pretty fascinating. (Trailer)

Frontera Verde, Limited Series
When a detective from Bogotá heads into the Amazon to investigate four murders, she discovers something bigger and more frightening than ordinary crime... something supernatural. And also Nazis. This is Netflix's second piece of content with "Frontier" in the title that takes place at the border of Brazil and Colombia. (Trailer)

Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus
Another week, another classic Nicktoon revival movie that Netflix bought from Nickelodeon. Last week was Rocko's Modern Life, this is week it's Invader Zim, which ran from 2001 to 2006 and was beloved by kids who shopped at Hot Topic when I was in middle school. This movie is the final confrontation between evil alien Zim and his human nemesis Dib. (Trailer)

The Little Switzerland
This comedy is set in the Basque Country region of Spain. When the tomb of William Tell's son is discovered in a small town, the villagers decide to push for annexation by Switzerland. Hilarity ensues? (Trailer)

QB1: Beyond the Lights, Season 3
This docuseries was created by Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg and follows the kinds of high school football stars that inspired the movie and TV show. Season 3 profiles phenom quarterbacks Spencer Rattler, Lance LeGendre, and Nik Scalzo as they go through the trials and tribulations of senior year. (Trailer)
Super Monsters Back to School
The Super Monsters are going back to school to get advanced degrees in psychology, art history, and business administration. Netflix really cranks this Super Monsters content out. It feels like every couple of weeks there's a new Super Monster. (Trailer)

Victim Number 8, Season 1
The other Basque piece of content on Netflix this week. This thriller series follows the police investigation in the aftermath of a terror attack in Bilbao. (Trailer)

Simon Amstell: Set Free
British comedian Simon Amstell does stand-up about the depressing futility of life and whatnot. Netflix puts out a stand-up special every week, and they can't all be Dave Chapelle. (Tuesday, Aug. 20 / Trailer)

American Factory
This fascinating documentary goes inside an automotive glass factory opened by Chinese company Fuyao in a former General Motors plant in Dayton, Ohio, and looks at the conflicts and commonalities that arise between the plant's rehired American and imported Chinese workers and what happens when the workers decide to unionize. Love Alarm, Season 1
If there was an app that notified you when someone within a 10-meter radius was attracted to you, would you download it, or would you be afraid it would ruin your life, or both? That's the very compelling idea at the center of this unusually thought-provoking Korean teen drama. (Thursday, Aug. 22 / Trailer)
