Yes, You Really Did Just See 50 Cent's Manhood on Power
His co-stars talk about being nude on-screen too.
No - your eyes didn't deceive you: you really did just see the tip of Kanan's (50 Cent) um, iceberg on Power and yes, that really was 50 Cent.
Kanan, as you know, is recovering from terrible burns as a result of Ghost (Omari Hardwick) literally roasting his ass and as part of his therapy, his Training Day-meets-Set it Off cousin Jukebox (Anika Noni Rose) deployed her girlfriend Candie (Natalie Paul) to make sure his hands work.
As Kanan starts the arduous task of pleasuring himself despite his body being burned seven layers beyond the white meat, we see for the briefest second the tip of Kanan's penis and no folks, that's not a Boogie Nights-type prosthetic.
Power's executive producer talks about new villain Jukebox
"My penis is going to debut!," 50 Cent says just minutes after sitting down to talk at the Beverly Hilton with TVGuide.com. He laughs and flashes that 50 Cent Cheshire grin, jokingly calling the moment his sex tape. "I don't give a f---. First it was supposed to be darker [after footage was edited.] You couldn't see it on the screen. [A producer ] was like, 'I gotta show you! When you put it on the screen, you can see it.' I don't care." His co-stars, including Lela Loren and, of course, Omari Hardwick, are naked frequently, he noted - a fact you'd be hard pressed to miss after watching even a few episodes of Power.
Yes, Power's stars are naked a LOT. But while Omari Hardwick and Lela's buff bodies probably aren't making people change the channel, the cast isn't just naked for being naked's sake. Showrunner Courtney Kemp told TVguide.com that the sex on Power has a definitive purpose.
"We don't put a sex scene in unless it pushes story forward," she says. "In broadcast TV, people start to kiss and then you cut and go to commercial. You didn't need to see the sex. That the people had sex was the story point. The sex in our show -- the actual sexual act and what happens to those people during the sexual act -- we always show it so you have to see the sex. It's about what story is being pushed forward by the sexual act." In other words, by paying close attention to the characters' positioning, the actors faces and energy and body language and you'll dig deeper into the narrative.
Ironically it's Omari Hardwick, who's frequently treating viewers to the sight of his Michelangelo-worthy backside, who winces at the sex scenes. "That is the tough one for me," he says. But it's all in a day's work. "What am I going to do, tell Courtney not to? What's great is that Courtney has figured out how to make people think why [characters] are having sex." His on-screen brother Joseph Sikora, who plays Tommy, feels the same way; they both believe in their showrunner boss and her storytelling so thoroughly, they drop trou in front of their co-workers and crew with complete trust.
"Courtney has always made the sex work for the story," Sikora says, "so you're like, 'I get it.' It always works for the story. And we're really close with the crew. There's a little ball busting going on, but it's all good."
No pun intended - we hope.
