  • Ask Matt | 10/29/2007
Does it seem like the networks this fall are nursing their new shows a little better than in the past few seasons? I know Viva Laughlin was canceled quickly (oh, well!), but the networks have picked up Gossip Girl, Private Practice, The Big Bang Theory, Back to You and Pushing Daisies for full-season orders. None of these are ratings blockbusters, but they have pretty decent followings and good buzz. Do you think the suits are trying something new as ratings, in general, have been down, or do... read more
  • Back to You Moves Forward with Full Season | Today's News: Our Take | 10/25/2007
Fox has given a full-season pickup to the sitcom Back to You, the first of its scripted freshman series to rate such an honor. Thus far this fall, Fox has renewed Kitchen Nightmares for a second run, ordered additional scripts for K-Ville and put the docusoap Nashville on, um, "hiatus." The Next Great American Band, meanwhile, last Friday debuted to dismal numbers. read more
  • Episode Recap: "A Night of Possibilities" | Back to You Show Blog | 10/18/2007
Is it 1994? I think it must be, because lately Tia Carrere is popping up everywhere — well, if not everywhere, at least on two shows I cover, and I only cover three, so if she shows up on Friday Night Lights, I know something's up. Between her hanging out with Larry David (cocreator of Seinfeld, coincidentally on in 1994) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier, also on in 1994) in recent weeks, I just have to wonder if I've been witness to a time warp. She did a cute job tonight, playing a woman... read more
  • Back to You's Fred Willard Is the Life of the Party | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 10/17/2007
On Back to You (Wednesdays, 8 pm/ET, Fox), the Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton sitcom vehicle, Fred Willard plays freewheeling sportscaster Marsh McGinley, whose lead foot alarms a coworker tonight when they carpool together. Marsh is the latest in a gallery of grinning goofballs that Willard has given us over the course of a career that spans 40 years. TV Guide: What do you enjoy about Marsh?Fred Willard: I love it that he's a sports guy and that he says whatever comes to his mind. He doesn't... read more
  • Good News for Back to You, and K-Ville, Too | Today's News: Our Take | 10/15/2007
On the heels of the announcement that Fox has cut back its order for Amy Sherman-Palladino's midseason comedy The Return of Jezebel James from 13 to just seven total episodes (see the Ausiello Report for more) comes word that the network has picked up two additional scripts for the ratings-challenged K-Ville. Variety is also reporting that Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton's Back to You is due for a full-season pickup by Fox, perhaps coming as early as this week. read more
  • Episode Recap: "A Gentleman Always Leads" | Back to You Show Blog | 10/11/2007
Well, I'll say one thing: This is the first time in recent memory I've heard the phrase, "Recorded in front of a live studio audience" outside of a 20-year-old rerun. In fact, it made me think I was too hard on last week's episode. It's a retro show in its own way, and perhaps I needed that jolt of perspective that Kelsey Grammer's little intro gave me.The newsroom of WURG certainly was all a-twitter this week. After Chuck overheard some network brass (who were in Pittsburgh for a program at... read more
  • The DVR Has Spoken: Survivor Is Most-recorded Show | Today's News: Our Take | 10/9/2007
This report was kinda cool until I saw that it's for the week of Sept. 17, aka the one preceding the true onslaught of the fall season. But I already started typing up this blurb and came up with that boss headline, so here goes: For the week of Sept. 17, Survivor: China was the most-DVR'd program, with 2.17 million people recording the show for later playback. Rounding out the top five were the premieres of Family Guy (1.8 mil), Prison Break (1.55 mil) and Back to You (1.46 mil), and a Grey's... read more
  • Episode Recap: "The First Supper" | Back to You Show Blog | 10/4/2007
Clunk. That's the sound this episode made as it hit the air. You may be wondering how a show could make a physical clunk sound, but (and imagine some dramatic flare here) they found a way! It's almost as if after last week's great momentum, the powers that be decided that they didn't want to give us too much funny too fast, and so they churned out an awkwardly paced and plotted car boot of an episode. On the upside, Fred Willard's Marsh was on fire tonight, and doing his proprietary shtick that... read more
  • Ask Matt | 9/28/2007
What did you think of the hour-long Star Wars-themed episode of Family Guy? I thought it was absolutely hilarious, and one of the best parodies I have seen in a long time. I know everyone is waiting for all the live-action comedy premeries this week, but don't you think that the best comedy period is Fox's Sunday-night animated shows? You may think that Family Guy can get crude and nonsensical from time to time, but you must admit that it's hysterical. Especially since I know you get all the... read more
  • Episode Recap: "Fish Story" | Back to You Show Blog | 9/27/2007
An alternate title for this episode could have been, "One fish, two fish, overfed fish, fried fish." I doubt PETA will be particularly thrilled with the outcome of the story. Me? I just kind of want to go out for seafood. While the fish-as-child metaphor was not exactly subtle (or original — they did it on Frasier in the episode "Flour Child," leading to Niles' wonderful line, "After all, a real child would have cried before it burst into flames"), it did create an almost Stooge-like... read more
  • The New Season: Wednesday Heats Up | Roush Dispatch | 9/26/2007
First, an important public-service announcement: Tonight on The War, we relive D-Day, a momentous turning point in military history brought to vivid life by those who lived through it, courtesy of Ken Burns' masterful way with documentary narrative. I know this is premiere week, and Wednesday is the most competitive night for new shows this season, but I wouldn't be doing my duty if I didn't remind everyone that this is TV you not only shouldn't miss, but it's an experience you'll never forget.... read more
  • Can Back to You Save Multi-camera Comedy? | The Biz | 9/21/2007
A time-period-winning 9.5 million viewers watched Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton return to prime time Wednesday in their new Fox sitcom, Back to You. Most of them surely tuned in to see two stars from two of their favorite shows, Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond. But the industry insiders are watching carefully for another reason: They’re curious as to whether the series about two over-the-hill local TV news anchors with a past can prove that the multi-camera comedy has a future.... read more
  • For Charisma, Trump's Out, Other Big Shots Are In | Today's News: Our Take | 9/21/2007
So much for that car-wash task dream. Buffyverse alumna Charisma Carpenter will not be toiling for the Donald after all on the celebrity Apprentice. Rather, she has booked a one-shot gig on Fox's Back to You, and, more importantly, a recurring run on the new ABC drama Big Shots. Details on Carpenter's Big Shots role are being kept hush-hush, though it is said she has a connection to Christopher Titus' character. Carpenter first appears in the Nov. 1 episode.Maybe she works at a car wash? OK,... read more

  • Episode Recap: "Pilot" | Back to You Show Blog | 9/20/2007
There's something about this show that reminds me of a glazed doughnut. It's nothing you haven't had before and something you know you should stay away from, but in the end, you choose it anyway, not only because it's comforting, but because as hard as you try not to, you can't help but enjoy it.Our setup (if the millions of promos that Fox ran didn't give it away first) is this: Chuck Darling and Kelly Carr were the dream team of Pittsburgh's local news scene. Now, 10 years later, Chuck's made... read more
  • The Wednesday Battle Begins | Roush Dispatch | 9/19/2007
Is it possible that this season, Wednesdays are the new Thursdays? An incredible amount of high-profile new programming — nine freshman series in all — will be introduced to the Wednesday prime-time schedule over the next few weeks, and when the dust settles, I can only hope a few of my new favorites will survive.First up are CBS, the CW and Fox, launching their newbies a week before the official season begins. The biggest headlines so far have been generated by CBS' unseen-by-critics... read more

I snapped up TV Guide's Fall Preview issue, and I find it a mixed blessing. While I appreciate the behind-the-scenes reportage and the luxurious layout, there's one crucial aspect that I miss greatly: your Picks (and yes, the capital P is deliberate). Of course, there were the "10 Shows with Buzz," but they included some shows you don't even like (Gossip Girl, etc.). And while you gave a helpful day-by-day analysis of the new programming, I and no doubt many other readers miss the days when you... read more

  • Fox: Follow the Bouncing Bones | Roush Dispatch | 8/3/2007
In recent years the Fox network has ended each season on such a high (thanks to hot franchises like American Idol, 24 and House) that we almost forget how badly Fox struggles to get traction in the fall.Perhaps sensing another fall disaster in the making, with two dark new dramas threatening to drag down its Monday and Tuesday lineups, Fox has rejiggered its fall lineup by postponing the murky New Amsterdam (about an immortal detective), originally intended for Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET, until... read more
