Q: I was wondering if you had any idea why Fox chose to cancel Back To You instead of 'Til Death. If I remember correctly, Back To You pulls in higher ratings and has a bigger backing from critics than 'Til Death does. Was it mostly a cost related issue? I would assume Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton don't come cheap. A: You would assume correctly. I can't explain why 'Til Death got a reprieve, but everything I heard and read regarding Back to You's cancellation had to do with money. There... read more
  • Fox Boss: Canceling Back To You Was Tough Decision | Today's News: Our Take | 5/15/2008
Having sitcom stalwarts Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton in starring roles wasn't enough for Fox to bring Back to You back to you, the viewer, for a second season. "This was not an easy decision," said Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly. "But with that kind of top-profile talent and...proximity to [American Idol] in the second half of the season, the expectations were higher."Reilly emphasized Fox is working to develop a live-action comedy franchise, but Back To You didn't seem to fit that... read more

  • Fox Fall: Death Lives On, Back to You Won't Be Back | Today's News: Our Take | 5/10/2008
With the upfronts officially arriving next week, Fox is among the first to unfurl some of its plans. Per the Reporter, the network has renewed 'Til Death for a third cycle yet is not bringing back Back to You. Though the Grammer-Heaton sitcom drew good notices and decent numbers, it's reckoned that production costs ran too high (due to its marquee stars). Also, Fox is giving a series pickup to The Inn, which is described as "Upstairs/Downstairs at a hip New York hotel." The pilot was directed... read more

Q: Thank you for answering the "why the new Gracie" question about Back to You. But what happened to Montana the weather girl? She had the best banter with Kelly and some of the most classic lines. Any clue? A: Clearly, Back to You is going through more than the usual share of first-season course corrections. (I've had more than a few amusing letters saying, "So they thought the daughter and the weather girl were the problems?") Ayda Field was dropped from the ensemble, and there's an upcoming... read more
  • Ask Matt | 4/21/2008
Q: Fox aired a rather fast-paced "recap" of the Back to You season in advance of its return last week. In it, they show the "daughter," who is definitely different than Laura Marano, the actress who has played that character the entire season. What's the deal? Is Gracie being played by a different actress? I've searched on Fox's website and e-mailed them with no formal response. A: During the strike hiatus, it appears they did recast the role (now being played by Lily Jackson) for the usual... read more

  • Patricia Heaton on Getting Back to Back to You | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 4/16/2008
Sure, Kelsey Grammer is worth his weight in sitcom gold, but Back to You (Wednesdays at 8:30 pm/ET, Fox) relies as much on the ballast of Patricia Heaton?s caustic Kelly Carr as it does on Grammer's pompous anchor Chuck Darling. The former Everybody Loves Raymond star explained why she doesn?t live in her old show?s shadow. TV Guide: What?s in store for Kelly and Chuck?Patricia Heaton: Generally, their relationship, and whether they should reveal that he?s Gracie?s father, will come to a ... read more

  • Galactica Exec Glad to Have Writers Back in Orbit | WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows | 2/13/2008
Now that the strike is over, what are the writers going to do? No, they're not going to Disney World, they're getting their butts back in the writers' room ASAP. Not only are the writers ready to go back to work, they are all fired up about it. A few weeks ago, TVGuide.com spoke to Jane Espenson (co-executive producer on the hugely popular and acclaimed Battlestar Galactica) and Charles Tatham (a co-executive producer for Fox's Back to You) on the picket lines. Now that the strike is over, we... read more

Other highlights:• After Prison Break airs its final fresh episode on Feb. 18, and the two-hour Sarah Connor Chronicles finale airs on March 3, House repeats will air Mondays at 8, followed by New Amsterdam (which sneak-peeks March 4 and 6). • Ask Matt | 12/17/2007
Do you think the traditional format for sitcoms like Cheers and even Will & Grace is dead? I watched the premiere of Back to You at the beginning of the season because of all the fanfare it received, but I have to say, the whole format just felt stale. It was like watching a real sappy Neil Simon play, and the laugh track and such seemed simply in the way. To me, the best comedies are now coming in the 60-minute dramatic form. They include House on Fox and Boston Legal on ABC (which aired one... read more
  • Back to You Acknowledges Polish Joke Not Funny | Today's News: Our Take | 11/21/2007
Outraged over a crack made by Fred Willard's oafish Back to You newscaster, that "Bowling is in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis," Polish-American groups have gotten Fox to vow never to air the clip again. "In no way was this dialogue meant to insinuate any connection between the Polish people and the Nazi movement," the network further said in a statement. "The line was delivered by a character known for being ignorant, clueless and for saying outlandish... read more
  • Episode Recap: "Something's Up There" | Back to You Show Blog | 11/15/2007
The good folks at WURG sure know their slapstick. It's been quite some time since I've seen good physical comedy on television, so what a thrill to see it make a comeback. Good slapstick, good slapstick. Now let's get to the better banter.I'm not sure we've had an episode yet that puts the whole crew in one situation, so this week was a change of pace. Little Gracie's 11th-birthday party was basically over before it started, because the only one of the six adults there who had steeled herself... read more
  • Episode Recap: "Gracie's Bully" | Back to You Show Blog | 11/8/2007
There is nothing more terrifying than having your 10-year-old classmates meet one (or both) of your parents, and I know this from experience. I felt for poor Gracie Carr, who so obviously wanted both her bully and her mother to disappear from this class trip to the station. She was probably thinking that the only upside was not having to have class. If only Kelly and Chuck knew that they were probably just making the situation worse for their daughter by wanting to confront the bully, whether... read more
  • Chaos Theory: Fox Reshuffles the Poststrike Deck | Roush Dispatch | 11/8/2007
As if the implications of the writers’ strike weren’t already giving us migraines, along comes Fox to make our heads explode with its latest incomprehensible schedule announcement, covering the strike-impacted midseason from January to April (consider most everything you read from here on subject to change). The first piece of bad news was expected: The seventh season of 24 is being postponed indefinitely, until Fox can ensure the entire season can run intact and uninterrupted. Who... read more
  • Ask Matt | 10/29/2007
Which new shows do you think have lived up to their hype? Which shows have fizzled, and which are just hitting their stride? Chuck is the first must-see on my list. Life is a close second, reminding me a bit of Boomtown. Pushing Daisies is growing on me. Until Lost and Battlestar Galactica return, I have found few series worth my time. What shows do you look forward to, and which have you given up on? read more
