  • Scheduling Scorecard: Women's Murder Clubs Big Shots | Today's News: Our Take | 11/6/2007
Big Shots just doesn't get any respect. On Nov. 15, ABC will yank it so that Women's Murder Club (or, as I call it, Angie Harmon's Matlock) can get a post-Grey's Anatomy sampling. The following week, BS is getting preempted for the return of October Road. Whether Michael Vartan and Co. will finally pop back up in time for the end of sweeps remains to be seen.... The Bachelor: After the Final Rose is bumping Boston Legal on Nov. 20.... Kathy Griffin's Straight to Hell comedy special will air on... read more
  • ABC Commits More Murder as NBC's Bee Gets Stung | Today's News: Our Take | 11/1/2007
ABC has ordered three more scripts for Women's Murder Club, and not a moment too soon, given that a writers' strike could start as early as tomorrow. Cavemen and Big Shots are now the only new ABC series for which the net hasn't ordered additional episodes.... That's gotta sting: NBC has pulled The Singing Bee from its November-sweeps lineup and replaced it on Tuesday nights with supersized episodes of The Biggest Loser. — Ben Katner read more
  • Pushing Daisies, Big Shots, ... | Matt Roush | 10/29/2007
Question: Pushing Daisies, Big Shots, Ugly Betty and of course Desperate Housewives all have this awful, cutesy "Baby Elephant Walk"-style score that turns my stomach. Perhaps if just one show did the campy soundtrack I could bear it, but so many? I compare it to reheated baby puke. It's turned me off these shows completely, but more new shows keep adding vampy, cutesy music. Doesn't ABC care about the oversaturation? Answer: What a great question. Got a bigger laugh from me than... read more
  • I thought Friday night was ... | Matt Roush | 10/26/2007
Question: I thought Friday night was supposed to be a TV dead zone. Now there are seven, count them, seven scripted prime-time programs across the original three major networks competing for my attention at a time that would otherwise be dedicated to the Sci Fi Channel. This season, CBS replaced Close to Home with the unproved Moonlight, so I thought I'd finally give Friday Night Lights a real-time shot when it started its second season. But I became disappointed with the direction FNL was... read more
  • Do you realize you might have ... | Matt Roush | 10/26/2007
Question: Do you realize you might have millions of Moonlight fans beating down your door, torches in hand? (Joking.) We Moonlight fans admit that the pilot was just OK, but it did have a really good ending that spoke of promise. And if you have kept watching, you'll notice that they get better and better each week. The show has a lot of promise, and after the cast/writer/etc. shake-ups, it has come out from under. A lot of other critics have agreed with you in being critical of the premiere,... read more
  • Though this question may ... | Matt Roush | 10/22/2007
Question: Though this question may answer itself by the time you chime in, I have to ask: Why would ABC flip its night around and have Men in Trees end Friday night instead of begin it? I don't have the naysayer's belief that ABC is actually trying to kill the series, but it just makes for odd scheduling: a crime procedural (Women's Murder Club) is going to transition into the whimsical (and fun) Trees? Though more people have DVRs and time-shift their viewing, a majority still don't. If ABC... read more
  • Ratings: ABC's Murder Club Kills the Competition | Today's News: Our Take | 10/13/2007
The premiere of the new ABC drama Women's Murder Club was Friday's most-watched program — with 10.8 million total viewers — as well as the evening's No. 1 performer among the 18-49 demo. What's more, it gave ABC its best Friday audience since May 2006.Elsewhere:• Trailing Deal or No Deal, Ghost Whisperer (8.76 mil) matched last week's numbers. 20/20 was a distance fourth (behind Fox's playoffs coverage, which averaged 7.46 mil for the night).• Opposite WMC at 9, Moonlight... read more

  • I've just got to ask: What do ... | Matt Roush | 10/8/2007
Question: I've just got to ask: What do the powers that be at ABC have against Men in Trees? We all know what ABC did to the show last season. But why didn't the network make this show part of its much-hyped premiere week? I couldn't sit through more than 20 minutes of the wretched Big Shots, and I think it's ridiculous that ABC moved Men in Trees out of the coveted time slot following Grey's Anatomy for this garbage. Answer: It's possible that an entire overhaul (so I hear; still haven't... read more
  • Women's Murder Club Kills Its First Pilot | Today's News: Our Take | 9/28/2007
The entire pilot for ABC's new Friday night procedural The Women's Murder Club has been reshot. Why? Apparently, it was a little too mysterious for fans to follow. Executive producer Joe Simpson, tells TV Guide that there were too many characters and too many murders in the first attempt to turn James Patterson's best-selling novels about crime-solving female buddies into a TV series. "We tried to cover too much too early," Jessica and Ashlee's dad says. So one of the books' characters, Yuki... read more
  • As thrilled as I am that NBC ... | Matt Roush | 9/24/2007
Question: As thrilled as I am that NBC is giving the stellar Friday Night Lights another chance, I've become even more excited about the show's new time slot, Fridays at 9 pm/ET. I know many have bemoaned the fact that Friday is a TV graveyard where quality shows are sent to die, but unless I'm missing something here, this new slot could work in the show's favor for three very big reasons. First, there’s the aforementioned reputation Friday has as a low-viewership night. Thus, the expectations... read more

  • Live Press Tour Diary: ABC, Day 1 | Today's News: Our Take | 7/25/2007
8:54 am: We're in the homestretch, folks, and that can only mean one thing: Critics have begun recycling their old underwear. That explains the wall of stank I just walked through entering the Beverly Hilton's ballroom.8:58 am: As we wait for ABC president Stephen McPherson to take the stage for the exec session, let me take a moment to extend a big thank-you to the generous folks at ABC Studios who had a case of Diet Raspberry Snapple shipped to my room yesterday afternoon. • ABC Gets Aggressive, with Familiar Faces, Campy Soaps and Cavemen? | Today's News: Our Take | 5/16/2007
Even with all the success ABC has had on Sunday and Thursday (thanks to the bold move of Grey's Anatomy to that night), there are plenty of other time periods throughout the week where the network simply wasn't competitive this past season. But while the struggling NBC cautiously put together a schedule that seemed designed to retain its diminished share of advertiser dollars, ABC is being much more aggressive. In the new lineup presented to advertisers Wednesday at Alice Tully Hall,... read more
