NBC Signs Deal for More Gymnastics Coverage

NBC is flipping out for more gymnastics: The network and cable partner Universal Sports have inked a deal with USA Gymnastics to carry the sport's biggest events through 2012, the Associated Press reports.

The pact secures the fifth major Olympic sport for NBC, which also has broadcast rights to key events in swimming, skating, track and skiing. The U.S. gymnastics championships, featuring ...

  • Now if only some network (one that Comcast actually carries in my area) could ink a deal with the ISU to air the Grand Prix series for figure skating!
  • Yeah! I love Gymnastics!
  • I love Universal Sports (but only when they're showing sports, not movies)!

Olympics: Women's Figure Skating...

Olympics: Women's Figure SkatingForget about the Shani-nigans of the speed-skating feud, Lindsey Jacobellis' fall from grace and Bode's disappointing body of work. Figure skating is the premiere event of the Winter Games, even without Jillian Barberie and Todd Bridges. And last night's free skate presented Sasha Cohen with the chance to become America's next golden girl.   The night's memorable moments: Kiira Korpi, Finland: Why do I have a feeling we'll be seeing this girl in Maxim sometime soon? In the words of Dick Button, "My goodness!" Extra hot points for skating to "Fever." Yelena Sokolova, Russia: Redeems herself from Tuesday's short program, when she had a Chernobyl-size meltdown. Why is it that all Russian skaters and gymnasts look like '80s New Jersey mall chicks? Liu Yan read more

Olympics: Women's Figure Skating...

Olympics: Women's Figure SkatingLike your average Winter Olympics fan, I was hoping the figure skating in Torino (Turin, to you Shroud fans) would feature the Wrath of Kwan, with Michelle finally capturing the elusive gold medal. That was not to be, so all the U.S. pressure falls on Sasha Cohen, who should definitely be played by Alexis Bledel in any potential future TV-movies (the Shaun "Flying Tomato" White gig will, naturally, go to Carrot Top.) Let's just hope the ladies' programs go smoother than the ice-dancing competition, which featured more crashes than your average drivers-education movie. Some of the night's highlights:Kimmie Meissner, U.S.: the second performance of the night sets the tone for the Americans as Meissner nails the combo of a triple lutz into a triple toe-loop. This, apparently, is very hard. Up unt read more

2006 Winter Olympic Games: Opening...

2006 Winter Olympic Games: Opening CeremonyIt's a little ridiculous how excited I am that this night has arrived! There's something so magical and exciting about the Winter Olympics that I just can't explain. I can't believe it's already been four years since I was tearing up when little Sarah Hughes took the gold in Salt Lake City. But before the madness begins, it's the mother of all events: Opening Ceremony. During this extravagant four-hour affair, we were taken on a journey of passion, fire, ice and endless clichés. Not to mention the obvious push for a time of peace during the one moment when the entire world is united. It all kicked off with NBC's Brian Williams reminding us how "dicey" our world is now and that "sports can do what diplomats and p read more
