Sensible Joe Hackett and his fun-loving brother, Brian, run a one-plane airline in this folksy ensemble sitcom. Their mutual friend (and on-again, off-again love interest for Joe) is Helen, who works the lunch counter while dreaming of being a cellist. Among their quirky coworkers: a dim-bulb maintenance man and Tony Shalhoub's Italian-immigrant cabbie. The series was produced by the same folks responsible for 'Cheers' and had a nice seven-year run.

  • DVD Pick of the Week: May 15, 2007 | Today's News: Our Take | 5/9/2007
Wow, March 15 is loaded with Warner releases! They have ER Season 7, The War at Home Season 1, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo Volume 6, Tom and Jerry Tales Volume 2, and Tex Avery's Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection, which aired as part of Tom and Jerry. That's five releases on one day!All right, time to get right to it: American Dad Volume 2 is my pick of the week for May 15. I'll admit that I'm not a big fan of this show, but the DVDs are pretty good. I prefer Family Guy over American Dad; I just feel that AD is too similar to FG, and I prefer Peter over Stan. The set includes commentary on every episode, plus three featurettes and "Multi-angle Scene Studies" on selected episodes.Other noteworthy releases coming next week: Banacek Season 1 from Hart Sharp and TV Guide, Frasier Season 9, Home Improvement Season 6, Martin Season 2, The Rockford Files Season 4, and Wings Season 4. read more

Raise your hand if you're already hooked. Shonda, you have just sold me on Grey's 2.0, or what you are currently planning on calling it: Private Practice. I can't imagine ABC not picking the show up for the fall. To make this easier for me to write, but more importantly, to give it a more reader-friendly approach, I'd like to split this in two. I'll get to my comments on the very well-executed Kate Walsh pilot later. First, let's talk about Grey's...I. GREY'S ANATOMYWhen I heard that Meredith was going to be experiencing another family death, my initial thought was Thatcher, but then I felt that it would be silly to kill off her father right after her mother. When her step mom Susan (Mare Winningham) showed up again at Seattle Grace, this time with perpetual hiccups she claimed were due to her acid reflux, I agreed with Meredith and Thatcher. I figured Susan was faking it as an excuse for Thatcher to spend needed quality time with his daughter. As Susan kept returning with worse sym... read more
  • Now that both Matthew Perry ... | Matt Roush | 2/13/2006
Question: Now that both Matthew Perry and Steven Weber (and D.L. Hughley) have signed on to Aaron Sorkin's Studio 7 on the Sunset Strip, do you think NBC will give the show ER's current "must-see" Thursday time slot? After all, Perry (Friends) and Weber (Wings) are both former Thursday residents and many have suggested that perhaps ER finally needs a new night for its old age. Or do you think Studio 7 will get one of the vacated West Wing time slots (Sundays at 8 pm/ET or Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET)? Answer: I'm pretty awful at guessing network schedules, but I'm betting that, given what I imagine would be the comedy-drama tone of Sorkin's new show (more Sports Night than West Wing), it would be perfect for West Wing's old Wednesday-night slot — although Lost has become a juggernaut these last few seasons, so maybe it would be better off inheriting the fading Law & Order's time period. Sundays won't be an option, at least for the first half of the season, because of NBC's new football ... read more
