Critic's Notebook: CBS at TCA: It's Elementary

Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller

CBS rarely stirs the prime-time pot. It doesn't need to. Monkeying around is for other, more desperate networks — a point CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler underscored when she took the stage Sunday for CBS' presentations at the annual TCA press tour carrying a large stuffed monkey. A not-so-subtle slap at NBC for having brought along an actual monkey — the breakout scene-stealer of its silly new sitcom Animal Practice — to pose with and otherwise try to distract the press from the peacock's dismal new lineup of shows.

The New Normal's Ryan Murphy on One Million Moms Boycott: I Think They Would Love It

The New Normal

None of the TV shows from the 2012-2013 freshman class have debuted yet, but NBC's new family comedy The New Normal already has an important distinction under its belt: It's the first new show to be boycotted.

"I was very excited than I was mentioned by first and last name in the boycott," star Andrew Rannells told reporters at NBC's Television Critics Association fall TV previews Tuesday. "It's my first boycott!"

This is not the first boycott, however, for co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck, Popular), who acknowledged that he was not.... read more

Critic's Notebook: The CBS Upfront

CBS

Whenever CBS unveils a new fall schedule, it's like watching an impressive round of chess, as powerful pieces (of programming) are moved strategically around the board (the prime-time line-up), operating from a position of strength to shore up weak spots and holes on the schedule, proving that an aggressive offense is a great defense against stagnation and decline. read more
