Premise

The history of black comedy is surveyed, from the early days of minstrel shows to the controversial humor of Richard Pryor and Dick Gregory to contemporary Def Comedy comics. Included are remarks by Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg and Mo'Nique. The film, directed by Robert Townsend and Quincy Newell, is based on comedian Darryl Littleton's book, "Black Comedians on Black Comedy: How African-Americans Taught Us to Laugh."
