Exclusive: What's In Store For the 40th Daytime Emmy Awards Show

We know who's been nominated. Now it's time to get some scoop on the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy show itself. TV Guide Magazine spoke with executive producer Gabriel Gornell and HLN executive vp and general manager Scot Safon about the ceremony, airing live on HLN from the Beverly Hilton Hotel (Sunday, June 16, 8/7c). Expect big changes.

"Last year we only had three weeks to prepare for the show but this time we have two months and that's going to make a vast difference in the way we honor daytime television," Safon says. "We were so heartened by what we achieved in such a small amount of time last year that we just knew we had to dream bigger. Our working theme for this year's ceremony is 'Past, Present and Future,' which will honor 40 years of the Daytime Emmys and 40 years of daytime television breakthroughs — the many ways daytime was there first, especially when it came to subject matter on the daytime dramas, talk shows and children's programming. It's an extraordinary legacy."

Premise: Creator-producer Merv Griffin's classic game-show version of `hangman' has kept on spinning for three decades. The money and prizes have gotten bigger over the years, but the basic format and difficulty of the mystery phrases have pretty much remained steady. Another series constant has been the nation's premier (and most fashionably dressed) letter-turner, Vanna White, who parlayed the gig into a bestselling 1987 autobiography. As for host Pat Sajak, he has won three Emmys for the series.
