"You ask for a simple white Christmas ..." and everything goes to cartoon hell on Eureka, already the most animated of Syfy's quirky series, and a natural to be brought back for a one-night-only Christmas special, a gift for fantasy fans, packaged with similarly themed episodes of Warehouse 13 and Haven. The Eureka special (8/7c) is especially inventive, as the isolated mountain town's overtaxed Super Photon Generator interacts with a child's hologram-generating storybook, and abracadabra, everyone becomes a cartoon character (including Sheriff Carter's much-abused Jeep, cleverly and petulantly voiced by The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons).

Happy Early Halloween: Turner Classic Movies launches a month-long series of Monday night horror marathons with the special A Night at the Movies: The Horrors of Stephen King (8/7c), an enjoyable survey of the genre by one who knows. "Terror is something that lives in the head whereas the reaction we have to horror is ... visceral," the prolific author explains during a discussion of The Exorcist, one of many seminal movies featured here, including the original Cat People, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Night of the Living Dead and, of course, Halloween. Tonight's lineup of spooky classics includes the original 1931 Frankenstein and the notorious Freaks, plus in the wee hours the silent masterpieces Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera.

The shooting death of a deputy sheriff provides some distraction. ... The popular, but by comparison ...

Between Twitter and the Internet (may I humbly suggest tvguide.com), you'll be covered, should you care to know just who it is we'll be gaping at and mocking (should they stumble) throughout the fall. The names have been flying fast and furious — my favorite in the rumor mill:
