The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Before Sunset" Season 3, Episode 21

This week's penultimate episode of The Vampire Diaries season was fast-paced, filled with vampy adrenaline, and ended with more than a few shocking moments. So let me attempt to catch my breath and get on with recapping!

"That's what happens when you try to paint your dead guardian's room in the middle of the night." -  Jeremy

While Elena and Jeremy are trying to revamp (swear no pun intended) Alaric's old room, crazy Alaric is actually alive and kicking in his high school classroom. He waits for Caroline to come by for her post-dance cleanup and as soon as she's distracted, Alaric swoops in and takes her hostage. She gets away for a second, but "hardcore Alaric" runs out into the sunlight getting all kinds of burns, and drags her back inside.

"What's the witchy workaround?"- Damon

There's always a way to undo a spell, Bonnie explains to Stefan and Damon, but unfortunately she has no idea how to make Alaric no longer immortal. She calls her mom Abby who's hesitant to help, saying that in order to make the plan work Bonnie would have to tap into some dark places. (Hasn't this girl already done dark anyway?) NBD for Bonnie. After making her momma feel guilty, she finds out that she can link everyone together through blood, and then once they pierce an artery or vein in Alaric, she'll stop a human's heart in order to stop Alaric's. Make sense? Didn't think so.

"How many times do I have to tell you, stop trusting vampires!" — Alaric

After Alaric calls Elena with his ransom proposal, she runs over to the high school to save her best friend. As Alaric is torturing poor Caroline, he tells Elena that she should join him in his plight to kill vampires. He brings up her family's mission and adds, "Do you actually think they'd be proud of you? If you don't side with the humans you're just as bad as them." But Elena doesn't let him get to her, but instead fakes him out with a stake and pulls a fast one throwing vervain in his face. He winces and the girls run.

"I need a few road trip necessities: Spare tire, flashlight, doppelganger." -  Klaus

Klaus is setting on getting the hell out of Dodge, but not until he has his doppelganger. Stefan and Damon won't let him in her house so he does everything he can (like kicking a soccer ball and throwing fences) to make them oblige. But he's stopped in his tracks when Stefan explains that Elena is gone and Alaric has her with intentions to kill. So the new plan is for them all to go and save her which, of course, they do. (With a lovely albeit fleeting Klaroline moment.) But when Elena sees that Alaric won't kill her, she realizes it's because Esther had bound them through blood and her death would kill him as well. Thus, she's safe, for now.

"I think we know who really came between them: You. That's why you won't choose." -  Klaus

Elena wakes up and she's at Klaus' house, tied down to a chair. Tyler is there as well and while Elena asks him to help her, Klaus wants "sire boy" to grab their bags so they can go — after they kill Elena. Klaus says he no longer needs Elena; he has his family and wants to do away with her in order to kill Alaric. Oh and he wants her to know that she totally screwed with the Salvatore brothers' heads. In a switcheroo, Damon and Stefan are once again determined to kill Klaus to save Elena. They show up to his house and with the help of Tyler, are able to puncture his skin so that Bonnie can complete the spell originally intended for Alaric. It works, and suddenly Klaus has lost all power. (We so saw that one coming!)

"If I choose one of you, I lose the other." -  Elena

Back on the Gilbert porch, where all awkward moments take place, Elena thanks the boys for saving her and apologizes for stringing them along. "It's selfish but I don't know what to do," she says. The brothers tell her they're going to do away with Klaus' body and leave her to ponder her love triangle thoughts with her friends who are throwing a victory party.

"She'll probably dump both our asses." -  Damon

Stefan and Damon drive away and discuss the impending choice that's to come. They realize they make a good team, but know that life will be different PEC (Post Elena Choice). They ultimately decide that whoever she doesn't pick will leave town. "All this over one girl," Damon says. Yep, pretty much summarizes the series.

"I didn't call the meeting, Liz, he did." -  Mayor Lockwood

Now that the sun is down, Alaric leaves the high school and calls an emergency Council meeting. But this time he's out to expose Sheriff Forbes and Mayor Lockwood by telling the rest of the group that they're harboring a vampire and hybrid.

"If he kills his human connection to end his life, that would mean I would lose you." -  Jeremy

In the final scene, Elena and Jeremy have a nice brother-sister moment before Jeremy goes to bed. Elena starts painting but suddenly experiences pain in her head and falls to the ground unconscious.

Is Elena suddenly supernatural or just having a bad (misleading) migraine? Tell us your comments below!
