The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The Murder of One" Season 3, Episode 18

Klaus is back on this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries! Does he have a way to unlink the siblings or will the white oak stake take him down for good? Keep reading to find out.

"We're going vampire hunting, Ric"
After going pyscho-killer on Meredith, Alaric is back to his normal self in the care of Damon. But rather than resting up, he's been tasked by Damon to whittle the Wickery Bridge sign into stakes — 12 to be exact. Damon and Stefan then take said stakes and arm Caroline, Matt and Elena with the weapons to take down the Originals.

"He stored us in boxes"
Klaus finds his brother Finn to convince him that it's time to return to Mystic Falls. But while Klaus believes he found a way to unlink the siblings, Finn is still being a martyr, ready to sacrifice himself to kill them all. Rebekah soon shows up and although Finn questions why they'd want anything to do with Klaus, Rebekah says, "At least he's not trying to make us extinct." And when words aren't enough, the two knock Finn out and decide they'll drag him back.

"All I know is I'm no better than you "
Although Caroline is distraught to learn it was Alaric that killed her dad, she's able to understand it wasn't truly his fault. So she makes him a concoction with herbs to help heal his good side. Alaric feels awful and says how sorry he is, so Caroline explains that she has blood on her hands too. "I'll take a page from the Elena handbook and believe you can be saved," she tells him.

"You slept with me so your trampy friend Sage could steal my thoughts"
Rebekah is a scorned woman and wants some retribution with Damon so she cuffs him and tortures him (and not in a sexy way). He soon passes out, and although we think we see Elena return to save him, leaning in for a kiss, it's all just a Damon hallucination. Instead, he's still locked up. In another room, Klaus hold Bonnie hostage, his key to breaking the spell. She resists at first, but Klaus calls up his brother Kol, asking him how the weather is in the Mile High City, aka Denver, where Jeremy is. He then sends a video of Jeremy which is enough for Bonnie to realize she must do whatever he says.

"You've never had Tequila before?"
Sage and Finn are throwing shots back at the bar when a passerby says hello. Finn explains that the man is Troy, who she turned so she'd have backup in case of emergency. Her fears are realized when she and Finn leave the bar only to find Stefan and Elena behind. Just as Bonnie is simultaneously completing the spell, Elena stakes Finn, and he bursts into flames. Bonnie, meanwhile, leaves the mansion, walks right past Damon, and sobs uncontrollably outside.

"They just died"
Sage and Troy go to kill Stefan, but mid-fight they keel over and die. Stefan realizes it's the bloodline and that Finn turned Sage who then turned Troy, which is why they died when Finn died. Even worse, they realize if the Originals die, so will the entire vampire species. Dun, dun, dun! So Stefan goes to find Klaus to "strike a deal": eight stakes of white oak for Damon. But Klaus isn't that dumb and can sense Stefan is bluffing. He compels Damon for further proof and confirms that there are still three stakes floating around. But Rebekah decides to unlock Damon and warns that they better get the rest of the weapons.  Back at home, Elena and Caroline ponder which Original they need to save to keep Caroline, Stefan and Elena alive. Should they gamble it? But then Caroline realizes that no matter what, they can't kill Klaus because he did turn one of them — Tyler.

"You beat him by being better than him"
Back at the Salvatore's, Stefan finally admits to Elena that hating Klaus isn't worth it. "It's done, it's over, we lost," he says. But Elena tells him that she never stopped loving him and that despite the crap Klaus put him through, he came out on the other side. But Stefan is regretful for pushing her away from him towards his brother. Although Elena denies her love for Damon, Stefan pushes her and says, "I just want you to look me in the eye and tell me you don't feel something for him." "I don't know what I feel," Elena finally says.

"Where the hell is it?"
In the final scene, Damon goes to Alaric's to get the last stake, but it's gone. "I'm the only one who knew about it, Damon," Alaric says as he realizes what happened: his alter ego took it.

What did you think of this week's episode? Are you hopeful they'll find a loophole to kill Klaus or do you want him and his family to stick around?
