The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "All My Children" Season 3, Episode 15

On this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, the plan was set in motion to kill off the Original siblings — until Elena grew a conscience and decided to thwart it.

Elena is trying to reach both Salvatore brothers, but while Stefan is ignoring her calls, Damon answers and says he's a bit busy... and Elena sees who he's busy with firsthand during an awkward run-in. A somewhat self-centered Elena suggests Damon was angry and lashed out by sleeping with Rebekah, but he suggests that maybe not everything is about her.

Elena is still going on about "gigolo Damon" while Bonnie is trying to figure out the privacy spell. Bonnie then tells Elena that Esther paid her a visit and wants her and Abby to help harness the power of the celestial moon to pull off the spell. Elena is not very happy about this and eventually leaves, only to be surprised by a visit from Elijah. He brings her out to the woods and calls her out on lying to him about her meeting with Esther. He yells at Elena to spill the truth and so when she does, he grabs her as collateral and heads underneath the ground into a secret tunnel.

Stefan and Damon need to figure out a plan to stop Esther and save Elena. Damon suggests they dagger Kol, who's at the Mystic Grill (where else can one drink in this town?) with Klaus. The brothers send in Caroline to distract Klaus, and it works. He follows her outside where the two share a somewhat normal few moments. (Anyone else love Klaus' smile?)  With Klaus busy, Alaric stabs Kol and simultaneously all the siblings feel it. Rebekah drops to the ground where she's keeping Elena hostage and Elena runs. In the nick of time, Klaus realizes what's going down and pulls the dagger back out. Elena may be in a part of the tunnel where vampires can't enter, but she's still trapped.

Damon and Stefan flip a coin to decide who will do the dirty work, which will in turn really piss off Elena. As Klaus and Kol are having a showdown with Esther and Finn mid-spell, Stefan grabs Bonnie and tells her she and Abby must stop helping or Elena's going to die. Bonnie explains that they can't stop, so Stefan says that one of them will have to lose their witch powers. In comes Damon who snaps Abby's neck, turning her into a vampire, and ending the spell.

Elena shows up to the house, but Bonnie doesn't want to see her. "Everything that happened tonight was to save you," Caroline explains. "Somehow she's always the one who gets hurt." Meanwhile, at the Salvatores', Stefan asks Damon why he turned Abby when he was the one who lost the coin toss. Damon explains that Stefan is hanging on by a thread with Elena, so why add this to the list? Damon then asks how long it's been since Stefan drank human blood, to which Stefan responds that he stopped the night he threatened to drive Elena off Wickery Bridge. "You're not fooling anyone either," Stefan says. "You still love her, Damon." "I thought I could win her from you fair and square but she didn't want me. I'm better being the bad guy anyway," Damon replies.

Over at Klaus', Elijah (who left Elena a nice note), Finn and Kol have all fled, leaving it back to the original two: Klaus and Rebekah. Rebekah then shows Klaus a video (they've really caught on to modern technology quickly) of Elena and the writing on the wall behind her. She shows him that it's a native calendar and a drawing of a white oak tree, 300 years after they burned it down. Looks like the tree -- the one thing that can kill them — is back.

In the final scene, Alaric wakes up at Meredith's. He takes some pills and then starts snooping where he sees some files of dead Father Forbes and the knife that was used. "You weren't supposed to see that," Meredith says as she points a gun at him and fires.
