The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "Dangerous Liaisons" Season 3, Episode 14

This week's Vampire Diaries was the highly anticipated Original family ball where there were some interesting pairings, a big plot to take down Klaus, gorgeous dresses, hot guys in tuxes and an "I love you."

The episode opens with Elena and Matt leaving the hospital where they were visiting Alaric. Matt stupidly sends Elena off to her car (in the dark) where she has a run-in with a pissed off Rebekah. But luckily Elijah pops up and comes to Elena's rescue. She eventually makes it home where she receives an invitation to the Mikaelson family ball and a special note from Esther, who wants to meet.

Caroline gets a message from Tyler explaining his whereabouts and how much he cares for her. The moment she hangs up the phone, she receives her invitation from Klaus and a fancy dress to wear. Caroline meets Elena and tells her she doesn't want to go to the big ball, but she changes her mind as soon as she sees Rebekah asking Matt to be her date.

Elena shows up to the big event in her show-stopping gown. Fun fact: the ball was shot in Evander Holyfield's house. Damon gives her some googly eyes before walking over to her, but Stefan beats him to the punch. As every woman in a love triangle should, she takes each of their arms and walks in.

Damon gets Elena's first dance (which everyone magically knows the steps of) and tells her she looks stunning. Stefan soon cuts in, and Elena decides to pull him aside with a new game plan. She knows Damon would never let her go near Esther alone, so she lures him to another room where Stefan is waiting to knock him out, giving her enough time to find the Mama Original. The two have a chat where Esther explains that when she died, Ayanna, an ancestor of Bonnie's, preserved her body with a spell. Esther has been on the other side for 1,000 years as punishment for turning her family into vampires and in order to undo the evil she created she must take blood from the doppelganger. Once that blood-filled champagne is sipped, the siblings are linked:  if one goes, they all go.

Klaus, meanwhile, finds Caroline outside and she immediately questions why he invited her. "I fancy you," he says. I know this guy is evil, but how adorable was he in this scene? They end up talking about their fathers, their love of horses, the usual.

Rebekah and Matt go for a walk where she originally was going to have Kol show up and hurt him. But his chivalry (the guy offered her his coat!) made her change her mind and she quickly runs back inside. Everyone gathers and takes the fateful drink of champagne.

Klaus takes Caroline to a room where he shows her his painting collection. She's quite impressed and Klaus offers to take her to whatever great art city she wants. But Caroline doesn't buy into his offers and instead sticks up for Tyler and tells him straight up that because he wasn't loved by his daddy, he thinks he can compel others to care for him.

The night is clearly coming to an end, and Damon wants to take Elena home, but she says no. He gets mad at her for cutting him out of the plan and she says, "Now you're mad at me for including Stefan?" "No, I'm mad at you because I love you," he shouts at her. "Maybe that's the problem," she hastily responds. Caroline interrupts them while she's looking for Matt. Uh oh. Although Rebekah called off the kill Matt plan, Kol still goes after him and breaks his hand. Damon comes to the rescue and pushes him off the roof before pouncing on him. Everyone runs out, and Stefan yells, "Damon what are you, crazy?" "Maybe a little. Far be it for me to cause a problem," Damon responds before peacing out.

Back at Casa Forbes, Caroline calls Tyler to say she misses him. She then finds a jewelry box on her bed and there's a little drawing of her and the horse. "Thank you for your honesty — Klaus," it reads.

At the mansion, Finn asks Esther if she's having second thoughts about the plan, and she admits that moral Elijah is making it tough. But they continue on and as says a spell and draws blood from her son over a paper with their names written, a tree forms in blood officially linking them all.

Stefan takes Elena home, where she admits to feeling guilty about signing the Original family death sentence. Stefan assuages her feelings and says goodnight. But Elena calls after him, asking if he really doesn't feel anything and how he does it. "You think I want to be this person? I hurt you ... I hate myself for what I did to you," he says. She pleads with him until he finally says, "If I let myself care, all I feel is pain."

In the final scene, Matt is nursing his broken hand and lamenting his lack of health insurance when Rebekah comes and apologizes. "You're really fun and pretty, but I really need you to leave me alone," he tells her. Of course, Damon is there to pick up the rejectee. They start drinking and it leads to a hardcore hookup scene. The end.
