The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: “Bringing Out the Dead” Season 3, Episode 13

On this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus and Elijah treated Stefan and Damon to an uncomfortable dinner, a few people were stabbed and that mysterious fourth coffin was finally opened.

Elijah is back and when he realizes that Klaus wasn't the one to take the dagger out, he's more than ticked off. The brothers immediately brawl and when Elijah asks why he keeps them all in the coffins, Klaus explains, "I need you to stand by my side, be my brother, help me destroy Stefan and I promise you our family will be whole again."

Caroline and Elena go to the hospital to find Mr. Forbes, but Meredith says he's already been discharged. As the girls are about to leave, Caroline's vampire ears kick in and she hears his phone. Following the noise, they wind up in another room where Bill Forbes is lying there impaled with a knife. But remember that vampire blood Meredith gave him? He suddenly wakes up and will turn into the species he hates if he doesn't continue the transformation.

Damon and Stefan show up to Klaus' loft where they're invited in for an intimate dinner party. There, Klaus suggests they talk about the originator of the Petrova line: Tatya. They both loved her, Klaus explains, so their mother sought to end their feud.  Klaus and Elijah later learned it was her blood in the wine that turned them into vampires. Although the brothers grew estranged, they recognized the sacred bond of family. Of course, Klaus and Elijah's history eerily echoes that of Damon and Stefan's.

Bonnie and Abby, meanwhile, are trying to open the coffin while having a heart-to-heart about their non-existent history. Bonnie explains that no one ever talked about her mom so she pretended her mom was dead rather than wondering why she never came back. Abby says that there's no way to say she's sorry, but Bonnie suggests there is: to try to harness power and help her. It actually works, and the two pop open the coffin.

At the Forbes house, Caroline pleads with her dad one last time to become a vampire, but he doesn't oblige. Bill tells her that people aren't supposed to cheat death, and she needs to respect that. Caroline cries that he hates who she's become, but her dad says, "You're exactly who your mother and I hoped you grow up to be." Caroline ultimately sits by his side as he succumbs to his fate.

Matt walks Elena home, but when they get inside there are bloody handprints everywhere. They eventually find Alaric, who has been stabbed. He's barely hanging onto life, so he asks Elena to kill him because if he dies a supernatural death with his safety ring on, he'll come back alive. While Alaric marks the third council member to be attacked, Meredith has a strong alibi and the others can't figure out who's running around with a knife.

At the dinner party, Klaus begins his negotiations with Stefan. He tells them he'll never leave Elena behind and that the worst thing for her is the two of them. Although it's true, Stefan refuses to take the bait. Klaus quickly pulls Stefan into the fire and tells Damon that he'll have to get his coffin back the hard way. But Elijah turns out to be on Damon's side so instead of retuning with a coffin, he's back with two daggers. Next thing Klaus knows, his brothers Kol and Finn are back from the dead. And soon they're joined by Rebekah. "You're free to go," Elijah tells Stefan and Damon. "This is family business."

The brothers walk home through the wood,s and Stefan admits undaggering Elijah was a smart move, but adds that Klaus could've killed him leaving him with Elena all to himself. "I didn't do it on her account," Damon claims. "I love her, Damon," Stefan says. "So do I," Damon responds.

Back at Klaus' loft, Rebekah tells him they're going to kill the doppelganger and then leave him all alone. As Klaus screams that he can't be destroyed, in walks a shocking figure, his mother Esther, who had been in that fourth coffin Klaus so desperately never wanted open. "Do you know why I'm here?" she asks. "Here to kill me," Klaus figures. "Niklaus, you are my son and I am here to forgive you. I want us to be a family again." Looks like the Original Family is officially reunited.
