The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: Our Town Season 3, Episode 11

This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries was essentially a back-and-forth power struggle between Stefan and Klaus mixed in with a little birthday/funeral for Caroline. How many people almost became casualties to the Klefan war? Keep reading to find out.

The episode opens with a smiley and sudsy Damon in the shower (most likely replaying that kiss in his head) and Elena taking out her aggression on the punching bag. Both are a tad paranoid about someone finding out, but for the moment, mum's the word.

At school (every so often, we're reminded they're teens), Elena explains to Bonnie that Jeremy was compelled to leave town. When Bonnie asks Jeremy about his leaving he seems surprised that she even cares. The two embrace but a lot is still left unsaid.

A sullen Caroline also shows up at school to see Tyler in front, who wants her to know that he understands why they can't be together. "I want to put you first but I can't and I'll never be able to" because he was sired by Klaus, he explains, He leaves her with a bracelet before saying, "Happy birthday."

Stefan shows up to Klaus' place to tell him to get his hybrids out of Mystic Falls or he'll remove them himself. Klaus shoots back that he better not retaliate or he'll kill people. The two go back and forth until Stefan kills one of Klaus' minions and really throws down the gauntlet.

Alaric and Damon, meanwhile, attend the town council meeting where they bump into Dr. Fell. She wastes no time before bringing up the town's "vampire problem" and clueing Alaric into the fact that she's on the founders' council. Klaus also makes a lovely surprise by attending the meeting, and eventually everyone, including the Sheriff and the Mayor, are on his side in the Klefan war.

Bonnie, Matt and Elena take Caroline to her birthday party, but instead they're throwing her a funeral to say goodbye to the old human Caroline and hello to her new vampire life. But after a few drinks under their belt, Elena and Bonnie get in a tiff, while Caroline is surprised by Tyler. He tells Caroline that he realized he can put her first when Klaus ordered him to essentially kill her, but he refused. Tyler tells Caroline he loves her and as the two begin to feverishly make out, Tyler "unknowingly" bites her. Looks like he has less free will than he thought. Just as Caroline falls to the ground and Tyler splits, Stefan shows up and kidnaps Elena.

As Stefan is driving at a speedy pace, he explains to a frightened Elena that he's going to stop Klaus' ability to make more hybrids. How could he do that? By killing Elena. He gets Klaus on the phone who isn't calling Stefan's bluff until he hears the terror in Elena's voice as she's forced to drink Stefan's blood. The car is racing towards a bridge that Stefan says he's fully prepared to dive into, and Klaus finally backs down. The car comes to a screeching halt as Elena yells, "How could you?" Not only did her ex almost kill her, but it was also on the same bridge that her parents died. Way harsh, right? Stefan says he knew Klaus would take the bait, which further angers Elena. "That's what matters? Destroying Klaus?" she says. "I don't really care what you think about me anymore, Elena," Stefan eventually says.

As Caroline is dying in bed from the fatal hybrid bite, Klaus shows up to apologize ... and flirt? Klaus tells Caroline she shouldn't be sad she no longer has birthdays, but instead that there's a whole world waiting for her. "You can have a thousand more birthdays, all you have to do is ask" he says before giving her his blood which will bring her back to life.

Elena is back home and on the porch (where all great scenes happen) with Damon. Will they relive their kiss? Not quite. "You can't kiss me again, it's not right," she says. "It's right, just not right now," Damon responds before saying goodnight.

The next morning Elena hugs Jeremy goodbye as Bonnie shows up to say farewell too. Caroline, meanwhile, wakes up to a present next to her bed. It's a bracelet from Klaus. Could these two be headed towards a hybrid-vampire Barbie romance?

After Jeremy's sendoff, Matt and Elena have a heartfelt chat back on the bridge. Elena says that she feels stuck holding onto a girl who had a normal life. But Matt tells her she's doing a lot better than she thinks. The two then hold another mock funeral saying goodbye to the Elena Gilbert of yesteryear.

In the final scene, Damon and the Sheriff go to examine a dead body found in the woods. But it's no hybrid that has succumbed to Stefan. Instead it's Dr. Fell's very human ex-boyfriend whom we met earlier in the episode. Who could've killed him?
