The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The New Deal" Season 3, Episode 10

After a nearly two-month hiatus, The Vampire Diaries has returned! Last we saw our Mystic Falls friends, the plan to kill Klaus was foiled by Stefan, who was out to seek some revenge on his own. When "The New Deal" picks up, everyone is waiting Klaus for strike back.

The episode opens with Bonnie walking into an empty house where she hears some mumblings. As the noises get louder she's led to a room full of caskets — Klaus' caskets. But as we soon see, it's all a dream.

Elena is out for her daily jog (since when is she a runner?) and suspects someone is following her. Is it just a guy also enjoying a jog or is it one of Klaus' minions following her? Definitely the latter.

Jeremy is back to his old ways, doing poorly in school, getting fired from work and skipping out on family time. Instead he's playing bows and arrows with new buddy Tyler, who can commiserate with girl problems. But Elena is nervous that Jeremy's new bromance is putting him in danger because Tyler is sired by Klaus. Tyler tries to explain the difference between being mind-controlled and being sired, and that he can still make his own decisions, but it turns out Elena's fear is warranted. After Tyler secretly takes off Jeremy's ring, Jeremy is compelled by Klaus via phone (those vamps and their technology!) to walk in the middle of the street and be hit by a car. Elena and Alaric run outside just in time, but as Alaric shoves Jeremy to the side he himself gets struck (by the guy who was following Elena).

Bonnie realizes her dreams of the coffin hiding place are a reality and tells Damon and Elena exactly where to find Stefan. While Damon struggles to enter the house because of the witches "juju," Elena confronts Stefan with the fact that until he returns Klaus' family, they — Jeremy, in particular — are in extreme risk. "Not really my problem," Stefan says. Elena is not happy with that answer and gives him something he deserves, a slap in the face. Damon eventually gets inside and pins his brother on the floor wanting to know why he saved Klaus. "I did it to save you! If Klaus died, his hybrids would've killed you," Stefan finally admits. "When are you going to get it through your head: Stop saving me!" Damon yells back.

Alaric eventually wakes up from the dead, but starts coughing up blood. Although Elena calls 911, Klaus' new buddy shows up in time to compel the paramedics to leave. Luckily, Jeremy arrives in time to shoot the guy from behind before grabbing a cleaver and chopping his head off. (Eww!) At the hospital, Alaric meets an attractive doctor who's stunned by his ability to be healed somewhat immediately. Of course that doctor (Torrey Devito, Paul Wesley's wife) happens to have the last name of Fell which means she's from one of Mystic Falls' founding families.

Elena decides to strike a deal with Klaus to ensure her and Jeremy's safety so she brings him the daggered body of his sister Rebekah. He says he'll spare Jeremy and that Stefan is who he's truly after. "You turned him into a monster," Elena says. "Now he's your problem." Elena also reveals that Rebekah is aware that Klaus was the one who killed their mother and she won't be too happy with her big brother when she wakes up. So before she does, Klaus keeps the dagger in her and says, "We'll meet again one day."

Elena realizes that Klaus' word isn't enough to ensure her brother's safety and so she does the one thing she can think of to keep him away. Damon compels Jeremy to go to Denver and to leave Mystic Falls behind. Elena tears up (as do I) at the thought we may never see Jeremy again.

Bonnie meets Stefan by the coffins and he explains that one of the four remains locked, most likely by a spell. The two both know whatever is in that coffin holds the key to torturing Klaus.

In the final scene, the one we've been waiting for, Elena thanks Damon for being by her side. He then tells her the truth -- Stefan killed Klaus to protect him. "I thought for one second I wouldn't have to feel guilty anymore," Damon says, "for wanting what I want." He walks away, but then quickly turns around. "You know what? If I'm going to feel guilty about something, I'm going to feel guilty about this." And then he kisses her. Cue the screams and squeals.
