The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: The Homecoming Season 3, Episode 9

When we left off, Original Daddy Mikael told Stefan he must lure Klaus back into town. In order to do so, Stefan, Damon, Elena and Mikael come up with a plan that they'll stab Mikael, tell Klaus they've killed his father, and when Klaus presses Stefan for the truth, it's exactly what he'll be able to give him. As soon as Stefan hangs up the phone, Elena pulls the dagger out of Mikael and he eventually comes to as Rebekah sits there waiting for her tense father/daughter reunion.

Tyler and Caroline are getting ready for the dance, but soon start arguing when he says he wants to get a bite, as in a bite of a human. Caroline yells at him for letting Rebekah's ideas get into his head and is further infuriated when he admits he set Rebekah up with Matt for the dance. "He should not be going to dances with evil blood sluts," Caroline responds in typical fashion.

Rebekah, meanwhile, is excited for her very first high school dance, but emotional at the same time. "I've spent my whole life loving and hating my brother with equal measure. I never thought I'd be the one to help drive a stake through his heart," she tells Elena who then presents her with the Original Witch's necklace. But Rebekah never makes it to the dance because Elena stabs her in the back saying she just can't leave anything to chance.

The Mystic Falls HS gym coincidentally gets flooded, so Tyler ends up moving the party to his house. And just like that, he has a band (My Morning Jacket), decorations, drinks and tons of people in his backyard. But the group quickly learns that the party is being thrown at the hands of Klaus who has returned to celebrate his father's death. And half the people in attendance are a hybrid army he's amassed.

Finally it's time for the Klaus-Mikael showdown. As the two stand face-to-face, the hybrid army appears behind Mikael. "They may be sired by you, but they're still part vampire and can be compelled by me," Mikael says as he grabs Elena. Mikael then berates his stepson, whose eyes begin to well up. (Is this that humanity you speak of, Joseph Morgan?) "If you kill her, you lose your leverage so go ahead," Klaus threatens, to which Mikael responds, "Your impulse, Niklaus, it has and will forever be the one thing to keep you from truly being great." And with that, Mikael stabs Elena, sending Klaus into momentary shock. It's while he's reeling that Damon swoops in with the special all-powerful dagger and stabs Klaus from behind. Then Elena reappears, revealing it was Katherine and she sends the wolfsbane grenades shooting into the army. But because nothing in Mystic Falls ever goes as planned, Stefan, shockingly, grabs the dagger loose, allowing Klaus to grab it and finish Mikael off. Klaus thanks Stefan and tells him he will no longer be under his compulsion.

Back at home, Damon is livid that he had Klaus dead and that they were prepared for everything that could've happened — except Stefan being the one to save him. "We'll survive this, we always survive. Trust me," Elena tells Damon as the two look so very deep into each other's eyes. "We're never getting Stefan back, you know that," he says. "Then we'll let him go. We'll have to let him go," she responds.

As if enough hadn't occurred in the episode, Katherine calls Damon to say goodbye, but when she hangs up, we see she's with Stefan. "He doesn't know where it all went wrong," she tells Stefan. "He doesn't need to know." And then we flash back to earlier in the night: When Klaus told "Elena" she looked nervous, he then added that if he's killed, he's ensured Damon will die too. Katherine tells Stefan, hoping he'll be able to dig deep inside him to care. "Klaus will be killed and we'll have our freedom but ... your brother will be dead, Stefan, unless you care enough to do something about it," she pleads. So why did Katherine choose to keep Klaus, who she's been running from, alive? Because she too cares for the Salvatore brothers. And then Katherine adds that she hopes he'll now get mad.

In the final scene, Stefan calls his buddy Klaus who's unaware that his sister is dead and thinks he's about to bring his whole family back together for a reunion. "You know what never gets old?" Stefan says. "Revenge." At that moment, Klaus opens the doors to where his family's caskets should be, but they're gone ... Stefan has them. "As someone who's been one step ahead for 1,000 years were you prepared for this?" Stefan asks.

What did you think of the midseason finale? Did you hear the word "humanity" or "sired" one too many times? And what do you think will happen when the show returns in January? Until then, comment below, and don't forget to check out this week's Vampire Diaries Bite with Joseph Morgan.
