The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The Reckoning" Season 3, Episode 5

This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries not only answered a few questions and set up some huge changes moving forward, but was arguably the best episode of the season thus far. Here are some of my top moments.

Damon shoots Katherine down ... twice
While major things are going down in Mystic Falls, Damon and Katherine are on a mini road-trip. But when the pair starts to make out in the car, Damon pushes her away and says, "Truth is, you just don't do it for me anymore." Later on she says, "You're going to get yourself killed. The Damon I remember wouldn't be that stupid." Damon's response, "I wouldn't have done it for you."

Matt becomes Captain Obvious
Poor Matt, one of the only humans on the show. Talking to Bonnie about how life has become too complicated, he says, "Elena's dating a vampire, you're a witch, my sister's a ghost, and I'm just a guy wondering how life got so screwed up." Funny to have someone recognize the outlandishness of a show we all love.

Matt then makes a stupidly bold move
Knowing that Jeremy dying then coming back to life gave him the power to see dead witches, he decides to see what would happen if he killed himself and let Bonnie revive him. So he weighs himself down and jumps in the pool with a chain attached. Bonnie dives in, unchains him, and as luck would have it, as she's doing CPR, he sees Vicki. "I need you to give Bonnie a message," she tells him before he comes back to life.

The doppelganger can live
Klaus arrives in Mystic Falls and immediately captures Elena. He then tasks Stefan to feed on her, thus killing the doppelganger just as the spell to break the curse says would happen. But Klaus is one smart dude and realizes that not only will Stefan not kill Elena, but that he actually needs her alive. Turns out he's realized he needs the blood of the doppelganger to continue his plan.

Tyler becomes a hybrid
The night began with Tyler and Caroline making out in the hall, ended with the two kissing in the hall, yet in between a lot happened. Klaus makes Tyler drink his blood before killing him so that he can come back as a hybrid and later makes him drink the blood from Elena. His plan seems to work when Tyler comes back with yellow eyes and fangs, a clear sign he's channeling both species. When Tyler and Caroline later leave the school (Klaus, for some reason, decided it was OK to let everyone be for the moment), Tyler is all hopped up on vampy werewolf adrenaline and tells Caroline he feels great. Somehow I don't think that feeling will last.

The story behind Michael
Katherine fills Damon in on the fact that the one bit of leverage Pearl (remember her?) had was knowing that Michael, the vampire who was also a hunter, knew how to kill Klaus. But where is he? That's where Jeremy comes in. Pearl only told her daughter Anna of his whereabouts, so Damon practically forces Anna into telling Jeremy. Later on, Katherine and Jeremy go to his tomb where they'll undoubtedly "wake" him, something that they've been cautioned against.

Stefan is now the "protector"
What a tense night Stefan and Elena had. First Elena tried to convince Stefan he could fight Klaus' compulsion because he loved her, but he explained, "I can't help what I am, Elena. The more blood I get the more I want and if I get so much as near yours, you are dead." He was able to hold back enough, though, for her to run. Damon then returns to Mystic Falls, rescues Elena from the hospital, and Stefan walks in just as he's saying, "I promise you I will never leave you again." The tension is thick as Stefan then explains Klaus wants him to keep watch with Elena under his protection. But which version of Stefan is this?

Line of the night goes to Claire for yelling: "Why is that doppelganger b—ch  wearing my necklace?"
