The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The End of the Affair" Season 3, Episode 3

This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries was filled with fantastic flashbacks, lots of important reveals and some of the best Damon one-liners yet. Plus: It's hard to deny how dashing Klaus and Stefan looked dressed in their 1920s-era wardrobe.

Here are my top moments from the episode:

Katherine returns
Elena's vixen doppelganger returned in both the present and the past. As the clue to Stefan's whereabouts, turns out Katherine was also around the night he first met Klaus.

Stefan and Klaus have a past
Through the flashbacks to the 1920s, Stefan and viewers alike learn that the two shared a night of fun in the past. To complicate matters, turns out Stefan took an interest in Rebecca, Klaus' sister. It was all fun and games until the police started shooting up the speakeasy and Klaus said it was time for him and Rebecca to leave. He then compelled Stefan to forget.

Poor Caroline
Caroline is locked in a chamber where her dad is trying to "fix" her so that with time she'll be able to overcome her vampire instincts. Thank goodness Sheriff Forbes eventually shows up with Tyler in tow and saves Caroline from pops. Caroline and her mom share a sweet moment before Tyler comes by and lets Caroline cry in his arms. Team Forwood!

The journals are back!
Julie Plec did hint last year that the journals weren't gone for good. When Damon shares Stefan's diary with Elena, she reads it and learns all about his time with Lexi and how she helped him phase out of being a human-eating crazed ripper.

The first casket is opened
Paul Wesley couldn't have dropped a bigger hint in this week's Vampire Diaries Bite. In present day, Klaus opens up the casket with his dead sister inside and pulls out the stake that's been keeping her dead all these years. It only takes an hour or two for her to awaken and return to life, a little pissed at her big brother.

Stefan and Elena come face-to-face
The couple's first encounter is at Stefan's old Chicago digs where he luckily distracts Klaus from seeing her. Later on, outside the club, they meet again. Stefan tries to explain that things will never be the same, but Elena is convinced that if Lexi could help him change, so could she. But he says that it took him 30 years to pull his life together, not much in his world, but half a lifetime in hers. "I don't want to see you, I don't want to be with you. I just want you to go," he says. Is Stelena really over? It doesn't look good, especially when Klaus gives Stefan back his memory of the two as friends and his feelings for Rebecca.

The necklace
Upon Rebecca's awakening, we learn via flashback that she didn't want to run with her brother anymore. After she declares she's choosing Stefan, Klaus forks her. But neither realizes that her necklace had fallen in the scuffle. It's the same piece that the witch Gloria needs to help them. And guess who has that necklace now? Yep, Elena.

Damon's best one-liners
Damon telling Elena that Stefan is in Chicago: "Let's just say he's not there to meet Oprah."
Damon explaining why he wasn't with his brother much in the 1920s: "Stefan was a cocky ripper douche."
