The Vampire Diaries Episode Recap: "The Sun Also Rises" Season 2, Episode 21

Before I get to recapping let me just say I've had a roller coaster of emotions throughout the last two seasons of Vampire Diaries. This week I experienced that on a whole new level and I fully admit to sobbing throughout the final 15 minutes. We knew there would be death and we knew not every beloved character would make it, but the loss of Jenna was an absolute heartbreaker.

The episode begins where last week left off — Caroline and Matt fighting off werewolf Tyler. They manage to escape with Caroline pleading with Matt not to shoot at him anymore.

Over in the sacrifice area, Jenna tells Elena that she remembers being taken away and the next thing she knew she was forced to drink Klaus' blood. Jenna wonders why she can't remember anything until Elena helps her realize it's because she was killed. Greta soon appears and makes Jenna drink her blood to continue the transformation. Greta then uses her powers to create a circle of fire each around Jenna and Katherine and soon brings the third piece of the puzzle, Jules, to the sacrifice location. Although Greta cast a spell to delay Jules' transformation, Jules gets a boost of werewolf power that sends her running at Klaus. He can't be stopped, though, as he grabs her, rips her heart out and leaves her to die.

Stefan decides he wants to be the replacement for Jenna, and Elijah tells him, "You're very honorable." Stefan responds, "Are you?" which is a great foreshadowing of what's to come. As Elena pleads with Klaus that she's done everything he's asked, Stefan arrives to inform him of the change in plans. But nothing is easy with the big bad Klaus. Instead he tortures Stefan and makes it clear that Jenna is still doomed.

Caroline and Matt return safely home. She learns that Matt was on vervain and that her mom is also in the know. "So this is your life now?" Matt asks. "Never a dull moment," Caroline responds. Although Matt says that the last few days have been great, he doesn't know if he can get past the whole vampire thing. He lays it out for her: his life is hard and complicated enough without her being involved.

Jeremy and Bonnie are still hiding out in their lair and Alaric, Damon and Uncle John soon show up. They've figured out another loophole to keep Elena a human. After Bonnie puts the spell on John that's supposed to enable protection for his daughter, she puts a spell on Jeremy and Alaric so that they can't join her in the woods.  Just before Bonnie and Damon arrive, Jenna tells Elena she knows what she has to do. She then leaps to bite Greta, but Klaus grabs her before she does and stakes her until she becomes hollow. Jenna is dead.

Klaus says it's time and Elena walks over to Greta with tears running down her face. Klaus looks at her and says, "Thank you," and Elena, the bravest person on Earth, responds, "Go to hell." He bites her neck and starts drinking the blood until she's gone. Soon Klaus says it's happening and the werewolf part of him comes alive. But then Bonnie shows up, Damon snaps Greta's neck and he carries Elena on out. Bonnie is all bada— witch, weakening Klaus to death as Elijah rolls up and is about to finish the job. Klaus then utters that the bodies of their family are safe and by dying he won't be able to tell Elijah where they are. Elijah hesitates as Stefan and Bonnie see that he believes him and says, "I'm sorry" before Klaus and Elijah disappear.

In the lair, Jeremy, Alaric and John wait. He's written a letter for Elena and has a ring for her as well. As Damon rushes in with Elena, she gasps for air. She feels fine, like a human. But as Elena comes back to life, John collapses.

At Caroline's house, Tyler thanks her for taking care of him. Caroline is devastated about Matt leaving her, but maybe there's a glimmer of hope now that she and Tyler can make it as a were-vamp couple.

The next day, Jeremy and Elena prepare to bury Jenna. Elena apologizes as Jeremy says, "I still love you," and they embrace. If you weren't crying before, this scene did the trick. There's a voiceover of John reading the letter that explains how he failed, but that he hopes Elena can grow old and give the ring he left to her future child.

At the cemetery, Damon is all angsty towards his brother, concerned with the fact that curse has been broken. "We need to get an idea fast," Damon says before showing Stefan his werewolf bite. Stefan looks into his eyes and tells his brother he'll figure out a way to keep him alive, and Damon tells Stefan that he cannot tell Elena about the bite.

Next week is the conclusion to Vampire Diaries Season 2, and what a ride it's been leading up to it! Is more destruction on the way? Or will our friends in Mystic Falls get a reprieve from devastation?
